My Grandfather was one of the crew on the U-35. I do not know what rank he held but I know he was a helmsman (drove the boat). I have been looking for information on the crew my self and have picked up many books and articles of the boats exploits. I found one volume of a encyclopedia published in 1919 that was very narrative. The one part that really got me was the story of how the crew was rumored to have transported a baby camel across the Med as a gift from a dignitary to their base CO. I can confirm the rumor and have a picture of my grandfather with that camel. If I can scan the pictures I have of the crew, my grandfather with camel, and of the boat I will post. The pictures are surprisingly good but with a sepia cast on all.

Welcome to the forum Steve.
We should love to see your pictures of the crew, your grandfather, the camel and the boat. Don't worry about the sepia cast, that is a minor detail.

Regards, Bob.

Yes, they won't be sepia for long, knowing some of the members on this forum! :D

It is probably just me but I have always liked the sepia tone effect found on older photographs but I do appreciate that warships were never originally that colour!

Ok ..... I finally scanned some of the pictures of my Großvater while serving in the Med. circa 1914/17. There are pictures of the boat that I'm trying to remove from old albums. My Mom made the mistake of putting pictures in those wax fixed albums that have petrified over the years.
Anyhow, there may be some interest in the assortment of uniforms. I'm sure each had an occasion to use but I don't know why.
And there is that Camel that made the trip across the Med. I was told by my Großvater that no one would come near them or their boat for a long time afterwards because of the stench.

Steve- I haven't been on this site for awhile. Great pics. A friend in NZ alerted me to one of your pics( the crew members on deck) that Richard Berger apears to be in also. I have lots of his album pics (CD form) that shows him, crew, capt Von Arnuald, sinkings, etc., etc. & 'FIPS" the monkey mascot saved from sinking ship & taken on board ( stayed 1 yr.) WHAT was your Grandfather's name?? R. Berger was Ob. Boots Mat in 1916 , later Obersteerman . Album also shows S. Skwara- lost overboard 7-2-1917 Regards, Aunt Bee (Al Hunt, Annapolis, Maryland, USA):)

Aunt Bee - My grandfathers name is Karl Kettelhut 1897 - 1969. I think it's fabulous that you have that album. Many of the pictures of my grandfather during WW 1 aboard U-35 are scattered amongst other relatives that are out of touch. Other artifacts including his Iron Cross are also in other hands. If there is any way you can share some of your pictures it would be appreciated.
