Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I am trying desperatly to trace an ancestor. He I have found his listing on the payrol on board the HMS Edgar in 1860, however it lists his first / previous ship as the HMS Portland. I have contacted Naitonal Archives but they don't appear to have this ship listed. Does anyone have any information regarding the HMS Portland around 1855 - 1860?

Truly confused!

Colledge's book Ships of the Royal Navy has the ship listed.

HMS Portland (ex HMS Kingston)

Launched in 1822, a '4th Rate' ship.
Sold in 1862.

Thanks for the info on the HMS Portland. Do you have any ideas as to why the National Archives do not have the pay books / musters for this ship and where else I might be able to locate them?

Many thanks :o

Here's a small amount of additional info which might help:

The sixth PORTLAND, a 52 gunner, was launched in 1822, in Plymouth, and served for forty years at the height of Britain's maritime supremacy and for a time as Flagship to Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby's Pacific Station before being sold in 1862 for £2250.

Good hunting....
