A wartime aerial view of Portsmouth Dockyard a fortnight before the Normandy landings 6th June 1944.
Looking west across 3 basin and in the foreground is the US Landing craft LST 322 and LCG1062(Landing craft gun)alongside her. In the dock in the centre is the destroyer JERVIS with the old CENTURION diguised as a King George V battleship, she was being prepared for use as a blockship in the Mulberry Harbour at Normandy.
Beyond JERVIS on the SW wall are the Captain class frigates LAWFORD (inboard) and TROLLOPE while astern of them is the heavy repair ship
ARTIFEX and the LST427 being assisted by a tug.
In the background(right) is the cruiser SCYLLA armed with 4.5in instead of 5.25in guns which she was designed to carry---she was heavily damaged off the Normandy beachhead where she served as Eastern Naval Task Force, flagship commanded by Adm Vain.

ACTION STATIONS----A unique experience of the modern hi-tec Royal Navy through interactive displays and simulators, large-format film and the exciting Inter Action marine Technology gallery.
I've taken that out of the souvenir guide Cylla. When I was visiting I'm afraid time was too short to take everything in.
Bob.
BATSTIGER,
Thanks for that info ,it might be a bit beyond our lot who are going down"to meet the navy"...most have a bus pass :)..but we do still have a few who will understand it all L.O.L

Thank you Bob. I think the poor quality was due to my taking the photo's behind the window of the viewing platform,

That's okay Bob, I envy you for the fact that you have been up the tower.
My chances of getting to Portsmouth again are nearly nil! I should love to have a few days down there and see what has happened to the place although people keep telling me to stick to my memories as I would be disappointed to see the modern day Pompey. What do you suggest?
Bob.

Hi Bob,
Depending how long ago you were last here, you will definitely notice changes. It is sad to see how much the Royal Navy presence has shrunk but at least a great deal of its history has been preserved in various museums. I think you would be amazed at how much Gun Wharf has changed and on balance, I think you would have a great time comparing your memories with the present,
regards,
Bob

The second picture is very dark owing to the glimmer on the water so I couldn't do much with that Bob.

Lets travel up north to Rosyth,I was there yesterday waiting to collect my son from the ferry which had arrived in from Belguim, in between times I thought that I`d go back to my days when I worked in the Naval Dockyard, well talk about getting a shock, the only thing that I could recognise was the main gate, after that, nothing. I knew that d/yard like the back of my hand in 1961, I could`nt even get to the waters edge to see the minesweeper which was there----next stop was the Naval married quarters, Mc Grigor Road, there again these were now owned by civilians, could`nt even see the field with the old clock tower where we would stage our football matches, even the new HMS COCHRANE buildings was in new owners hands as was the Admirals house near the Forth bridge where each ships would fire a gun salute on entering harbour-----definately not the Rosyth that I remember.
Has anyone any photos of the dockyard when it was in Navy hands?

This is the only one i have .

Whilst we are up in Scotland has anybody got any Photies of Rosyth dockyard?
When I was on the Apollo I passed out for Petty Officer in the dockyard but the thing that stands out most in my mind was the memory of so many carriers and cruisers in the docks and basins that had made names for themselves during the war and were awaiting their fate. I'm talking 1953, oh! to have had a digital camera then.
Cheers, Bob.

Thankyou for the Pictures of Portsmouth Dockyard... as some of you know, we have a season ticket for the historical Dockyard, but despite already having been there three times, we have yet to make it into 'Action Stations'..although it is high on the list of priorities for my children!
Now things have settled again, I hope to be back down there in a couple of weeks :D
Here is a birds eye view of "ROSYTH"

I would say by looking at Cyllas photo of the dockyard that this was taken when the yard was in civilian hands otherwise the docks would be full of naval ships either on R&R or in for refits, anyone got a photo of the yard in the 60/70s ?
Some old ariel shots of Porstmouth that i came across from the Portsmouth website.

Not sure if this has been posted before but this sequence of photos (can be viewed like a slide show) contains many historical warships and establishments in and around Portsmouth Harbour:

Hi Rob.Nice set of shots. Thanks for the link. They must of been taken in the mid-late 60's.
Regards Steve.
We were living in Portsmouth when the airport was closed; in poor weather, an aircraft overshot onto the Eastern Road, which had to be closed until the situation was cleared up.
Portsmouth Council decided to close the airport and eventually sold it off for housing - a great mistake, it would have been a boon with the development of shorter run aircraft and helicopters.

hello # 1
Going through these photos, surely the best is number 21 with the paddle tug.
Such a pleasant change to see such antics. Well if you can, then why would you not.

Re the A/C overshoot
Here is the answer from 'hampshire a/c crashes and accidents site' ... it was on 15th Aug 1967, an HS 748 of Channel Airways, in wet conditions, on the grass runway and no casualties. I remember the incident, was at Tangmere at the time.

Thanks very much, glad my memory has not yet deteriorated!

Rob- Have just made time to go through the 40 odd pics - wonderful! Covers a lot of my life, the house where I was born, the church where I was baptised, my first school, Hillside where I was an assistant y. leader about 1953, The Camber where I worked and the old Generating Station with its old coal feeders.
Then, when I returned later in life, the Cottage Homes and Residential Nursery, the Eastern Road daily from Farlington to work in Old Portsmouth, Highbury Tech. where our residential staff went for training - I could write a book!
Many thanks for this opportunity to wallow!

Rob, merged your thread into a new thread with other aerial portsmouth posts. Can we keep this thread just for aerial views. Other Portsmouth topics can be discussed in one of the other Portsmouth threads.
Cheers
