Born Falmouth Cornwall, 3rd July 1854. Polwin signed on for service aboard HMS Boscawin just after his 15th birthday on 20th August 1869. At the time his father, Thomas Polwin signed saying he had his blessings. His commencement of engagement began on 3rd July 1872.
Between 1869 and 1873, Polwin served aboard Her Majesty's following vessels at which time the records transfer over to the new numbering system.

At this time he signs on for an additional 10 years of service in the Coastguard aboard HMS Repulse and serves at the following Stations bewtween 1882 and 1909 at which time he retires to pension after 40 years of dedicated service. Upon seperation Polwin had risen to the rank of Ch. Officer
HMS Repulse---Stone Creek,Bridport,Porthillie, HMS Northumbland, HMS Alexandria---St.Mawes,HMS Weymouth--- St Mawes,Exmouth,Dowderin??, HMS Western---Dowderin and Lizard.
