Archibald Hawkey was born in Newlyn, Cornwall on 26 November 1884. He listed his occupation as that of a Labourer at the time that he attested at Devonport on 26 November 1902. He was 5' 4" with dark hair, brown eyes and dark complexion which probably came from all that time working outdoors.

His first duty was aboard HMS Northampton a Nelson Class Armoured Cruiser during which time he attaines his Trained Man sub-rating. From there he serves aboard HMS Calliope (Survived Samoa Hurrican of 1889) a 2779-ton Comus class screw corvette, HMS Melampus, Apollo Class Cruiser and then he goes aboard HMS Hyacinth on 21 July 1903 which leads to his qualification for the AGS with Somaliland 1902-04 and back to my comment of flipping through Fevyer & Wilson's book.

While aboard HMS Hyacinth, Hawkey takes part in the Action at Illig on 21th April 1904 in which he wounded in the neck during the encounter with the Dervishes. From the Official records and the Naval & Military Record Hyacinth suffered two killed in action and three wounded during this action. Hawkey survives his wounds and continues his service aboard the following excluding shore establishments

HMS Defiance (Royal Naval Torpedo School)

HMS Vulcan (Torpedo Boat Depot Ship)

HMS Orion (BS)

HMS Blake (Armoured Cruiser, Converted to a destroyer depot ship in August 1907 after being struck of the navy list in 1906. Served as the depot ship for the 2nd destroyer flotilla of the Grand Fleet and then to the 11th Destroyer flotilla)

HMS Talbot (Eclipse Class Cruiser)

HMS Amphion from 24, October 1913 till 13 April 1914 just 4 months before war was declared with Germany and the loss of her to a mine and the loss of One officer and 150 men. The first British Naval loss for the war.

HMS Pomone ( Pelorous Class Third Class Protected Cruisers and training ship at Dartmouth during the war)

HMS Prince George from 30 July 1914 to 14 march 1916 (Majestic Class BS) He would have taken part in the following:

7th Battle Squadron Channel Fleet.
25 August 1914 transportation of Plymouth Marine Battalion to Ostend.
February 1915 transferred to Dardanelles.
March 1915 took part in attacks of forts.
3 May hit by Ottoman fire during attack and repaired in Malta.
January 1916 hit my torpedo that failed to explode during evacuation of troops.
March 1916 paid off at Chatham to release crews.

After being released Hawkey serves aboard Vivid and Defiance before finding his way to HMS Leander (8 Aug 1916 / 23 Dec 1917) to which his GV LSGC is named to. It is during his time with HMS Leander (Sylvia) that he is awarded his D.S.M. (LG 20-7-1917) for Services in Action with Enemy Submarines

From there he continues his career on HMS Tyne, Wellington (Sylvia), Apollo and various shore bases until he eventually obtains the rank of C.P.O. He is Shore Pensioned on 24 Nov 1924 and joins the R.F.R. of which he serves until being demobilized on 2 April 1938 thus ending a long and most interesting career.
