Nicholas Hay was born 12, Oct 1861 in Milford, Hants. He enters as a Boy 2 - 25 July 77. Signs on for CS when age 18 on 12 Oct 79. Re engaged 12 Oct 89 & for another 5 yr stint on 12 Oct '99.

Rated Ord, AB & TM (Trained Man) 1 July 80.

Gets cells for 7 days 13 - 21 Dec '81 & reduced to 2nd class for Conduct from 14 Dec 81 to 14 Jun '82. After that he behaves himself for the rest of his career - the stint in cells cleaned up his act for sure! Maybe thats when he decided to become a Crusher in future!!

Rated Yeoman of Stores 29 Mar 83; Ships Corpl 2 cl: 10 Feb 88 & Sh Cpl 1cl - 10 Feb 90 & MAA on 8 Sep 94.
He is promoted MAA whilst serving on Magicienne & is permitted to remain there in lieu of a Ships Cpl until he is relieved.

His ships minus shore bases:

DRUID - Wood Screw Corvette of '69

HERCULES - Armoured Battleship of '68

COLOSSUS - Arm'd Turrett B/S of 82

NORTHUMBERLAND - Ironclad B/S of '66

ALEXANDRA - Turrett B/S of '75

MAGICIENNE - 2 cl Cruiser of '80

MALABAR - Iron Troopship of '66 - later became baseship at Bermuda '97 & renamed TERROR.

ANSON - B/S of '86

CAMPERDOWN - Turrett B/S of '85

AMPHITRITE - 1st cl Cruiser of '98.

So he appears to be a big ship man.

Awarded LS medal whilst MAA on ANSON: 6 Apl '97.

He goes to Pension on 16 Apl '02 & is recalled for WWI on 4 Aug 14 but dischaged "medically unfit" same day. Must have been pretty obvious he was unfit as most of the unfits took a few wks to a month or so to be weeded out of the thousands called

Good write up, Master At Arms wouldn't generally serve on a ship smaller than a 1st Class Cruiser.

H.M.S.Fencer Escort Carrier, had a MAA & A Crusher, although we were a orderly crew, I have a photo of our MAA umpiring a cricket match in our hanger. when some kind ship-mate tells me how to post picture. Doug.Birch.

HMS Fencer's MAA umpiring a cricket match in our hangar, note the screen above wicket-keeper. the hangar was used as autility space for various functions, like cinema, sod's operas etc. I was the cinema projectionist, quite
rewarding, for I got to visit other ships to exchange films.Doug.Birch.
