View Full Version : Portraits of British Admirals
These are all taken from two books of portraits published in 1917 (copyright expired me thinks?). They seem to have been taken from photographs in certain cases but they're still wonderful. One of my hobbies is collecting old published art albums such as these, to try and inspire me to draw better!
It's interesting to reflect on the nature of their poses. Most look rigid or at least uncomfortable to me. But one, of Alexander-Sinclair, is so relaxed and warm.
The dog helps in one of them I feel.
And here are some more. The fact that some of them look so uptight makes it more likely that some of them are taken from photographic portraits - the one of Bacon is definitely from a photo at any rate. And I can't imagine Evan-Thomas' dog being a good sitter for a sketch!
I'm sure you're right. Posed photographs.
And being photos - and no doubt taken for a reason, they lack life. An artist would be telling us something of the man, not just reproducing his likeness for posterity.
Very few photographers can achieve what an artist routinely creates.
