I just read a breakdown on Chinese Naval strength for the current 2012:

A total of 972 ships with the following detail:

Carriers 1
Destroyers 25
Submarines 63
Frigates 47
Patrol craft 332
Mine Warfare craft 52
Amphibians 233

that does'nt add up to the 972 so don't know where they're hiding the rest
(that same 972 wa also given for 2011 so maybe they junked/sold a lot ?),.

Didn't see a breakdown on Naval personnel just a total for" Chinese Military"

which lists 2,285,000 active and 800,000 reserve out of "fit for military service 618,588,627 !).

Merchant Ships total 2,012.

Whatever- they've got a few more boats and bods than us !

HI All! Having looked up the Chinese Navy's order of battle I borrowed the image of the flagship as my avatar. I admit it was from pre half-life refit.
Cheers John O'C.

That seems to the case with the Chinese Navy giving numbers out to give the impression they are or have a large naval force. They do not list there secondary vessel or support vessels in there listing. I would imagine the listing as shown is more the "Battle Fleet" for that country's Navy.

As are many naval observer's they have noted this many times over.

From China Military News and Washington Post March 20th-dsl

A group pf retired Admirals gathered at a recent Washington symposium expressed general concern and alarm at China's growing military ,
including naval strength.

Retired Japanese Vice Admiral Yoji Koda (Maritime self defence force) opined:

"Now is not the time to shadow-box,The US,Japan and South Korea must be ready and together prepare for the growing Chinese threat in ten to twenty years from now ".........Because China's nuclear capability does not match that of the US,it relies on mobile warships as potential launch pads for nuclear missiles"....China is also building up it's presence in Africa and South America as a way to expand it's global influence.

Retired US Admiral Patrick Walsh said " China's political, economic and military expansion will be both dramatic and traumatic " (in the coming years)

Others had discussed the general increase in Naval ship purchases in Asia as a whole, and of Chinas recently stated intention of investing in more Carriers,

Hmm!-a Japanese Admiral sabre rattling-glad no one took him up on "the prepare for the growing Chinese threat-which could mean a "danger" to Japan and S Korea. China will grow inexorably; and will certainly become the Eastern Hemisphere Superpower.
