For a while now I've been searching the history of Captain William E George known as the Alaskan Pilot.
Capt William E George went to the Western ocean, aquired a the schooner, Alpha, and for a number of years traded up and down the coast from San Francisco to Alaska, chiefly in the waters of the latter section of the coast.
1876: He went to Victoria BC Canada as the captain of the steamship 'State of California,' then plying between Puget Sound and Alaskan ports. He was one of the first to prepare charts of the nothern waters, played a big part in making navigation in that part of the world safer.
1900: Pilot for the Pacific Coast Steamship Co. for 40 years.
1917: He was closely identified with various sailing expeditions made to Alaska and N British Columbia coast.
During the thirty years that Captain George navigated the northern waters he never had an accident with any of his vessels.
1897: After 21 years with the Pacific Coast Line he left at the time of the Klondike rush and joined the steamer City of Seattle on the Skagway run for Dodwell & Company. He was several years with that steamer.
I'm curious to know if anyone has come across Captain William E George and the ships he was on.
