This book is a must read to anyone who has served in the navy, it covers stories of the Royal Navy through 2 World Wars, action taken when ships were attacked and when ships were sinking and reports by different crew members on how they fought and coped with each situation, one incident was when HMS WALKER and the VANQUISHER collided in the dark,no lights showing, the bows from the WALKER cut into the mess deck of the VANQUISHER killing and injuring many who were at rest in the mess, ones who could not get out from the tangled mess and were badly injured the 1st Lt pulled out his revolver and shot the men as their situation was hopeless ---a book which once you have started to read is hard to put down wondering what the next chapter will bring.

Hi All

I'm hoping that this book is among my Christmas presents. One of my boys usually buys me something very naval.

I have read the book, it's very good but there are some errors. On of the errors caused to write to the forum , can't remember which thread, the author said there was a brothal in Flotiana Malta called the RAG, no one seems to have heard of it.

Lads, why go to the expence of buying ,get your local library to order it for you, you`ve paid your taxes over the years so reap the benifits from it.

Came across the piece about the medical examination by the Doc with the head lamp attached examining the ratings "privates"--burst out laughing, reminded me of my medical in that area when I first joined, I had just turned 17 and the Doctor was a Lt.Cmdr Wren--I felt like running out of the building :o:o

Getting back to the book---get it and read it,it holds nothing back, read what our shipmates suffered during the war, what they went thro` and coped with the situation--best book that I`ve read for a long time.

Dave, you sound like my wife, she is always telling me to use the library. I just cannot resist buying books, nearly all are RN related. I now have book cases in the attic & three downstairs, maybe around 60 books. One day when I depart they may bring in a good sum.

Keith, my old computer cupboard is full of navy books mostly bought by my Grand children and son but now and again I look in at the City(Carlisle) library when I`m in the town and bring a book home, always something to do with the navy ----you never lose the feel for the navy, my wife says that I still have the navy roll when out walking---but as I say if you cannot find a certain book in the shops then the local library is your best bet as they tour the county till they find it.
