When I was a kid, this was fairly hush hush stuff, but would like to know if anyone else heard or was involved at the time with the RCN, I know my father was...(Shag Harbout N.S.)

I see it posted up now and again on other navy sites, this one has a bit more info, well believe it or not, navy was on alert and divers were sent out, that is all I know that is true...

Seems the men in black silenced this one did they? :)

Gentlmen: The Shag Harbour UFO is more myth than reality. Until a certain generation passes on the real story will not be told. Until then silence rules. There are no men dressed in black!

I have long been interested in the subject of UFO's and I have studied in great depth the Shag Harbour incident.

In truth I believe it to be one of the most important sightings on record. If you like it is to Canada what Roswell is to America and Rendlesham Forest is to Britain.

Until all the facts are released into the public domain and the governments of the worlds finally come clean on past sightings and cease their determination to keep secret as much as possible from the public what chance has the truth from ever emerging??

I have on many occasions been tempted to post things releted to my great interest in Ufology but each time have desisted on the grounds of my workload as a moderator and my belief that this is after all a naval history forum. I will say as a postscipt that for many years I was a confirmed sceptic regarding Aliens and UFO's but after much research that too often featured repeated instances of withdrawn and altered statements along with missing documents and even case officers who seem to have vanished into the ether this is no longer the case.

I am convinced the truth is out there and we are being lied to by those who believe they know better what is good for the public to know.

One has only to look at the virtual gagging order in place on military and commercial pilots regarding reporting publicly any contact with UFO's to realise there is a massive cover up in place and has been for years.

Well in a way it is a naval story. The object although originally landed in Shag Harbour, possibly moved to off CFS Shelburne following. CFS Shelburne being part of the SOSUS chain at the time.

There were navy dive teams brought in from Halifax to investigate the landing site in Shag Harbour. When it was thought to move off Shelburne, there are stories of Navy warships moving into the area.

When you are on a ship and especially in those days, if you didn't work on the bridge or in the ops room, you had no idea of where you were. You could well be sitting off the coast of Shelburne for days and the majority of the crew never know it.

So though it might be a hoax or real, there is navy interest in the event.

Gentlemen: I have said all that I intend to say on this subject. The RCN may have spent considerable sums on the matter but they did not turn up the cause of the event.

It is still an interesting subject nonetheless. I wonder if they ever used side scan sonar in the area.

All I know is what I was told by my father on the dive team at the time out of Halifax, a good naval secret for sure, I assume all divers are passed on now of the event, and do not know what happen to the "material" that went to Shearwater (was not NATO or Soviet material)

Interesting tales when you get old salts around the table at a legion, my ears perk up

A bit of light reading on the subject.

I remember it being the talk of the dockyards for sometime, usually over a tot!

Matelot: Don't give up the tot-it is probably the best part of all the story telling!

Ah yes Brian, can still taste it! A good topic for another day, if someone were to choose. Could be good for a lot of salty dips, as they say.
