Can anyone assist in identifying this group photo. My great uncle, Claude Francis Fry (shown left between 2 officers, in the last but one row) served on the submarine E19 in the Baltic in World War 1, and received the Cross of St George. There seem to be both Russian and British sailors. The caps include Bonaventure, Diadem, Dolphin and Maidstone. I have other photo's showing the Cross being presented by the Russian Tsar, just seems strange why this group should have been singled out for their own photo.

I have a perfect crew photo of E19 which you have posted here, not a mark on it, and more info on Mr Fry. Send me a personal message and we can exchange email address so i can help you.
I have done a lot of work around the Czar visiting the RN Baltic crews, this was in November 1915, & on this occasion 5 men from E8 & 5 men from E19 were chosen to have their medals personally pinned on them by the Czar. The remainder of the E8 & E19 crews received their Cross in June 1916 which is the common photo seen in the book Baltic Assignement, & when this crew photo was taken of E19. The Russian sailors are the Signalman & Telegraphist as the British were working within the Russian Naval System, & the officer was a liason/navigating 3rd officer, & this chap was best man at Lelise Ashmore's wedding, so not a strange set in a photo, it is simply the current crew in June 1916 of E19.
E19 still kept her own telegraphist & signalman, & the memiors i have of the telegraphist say their roll was to man their diving station & keep their eqiupment in order while the Russians did the signal work.
