Brian sorry finger trouble,

I am building a rather large F-14a of VF-114 Aardvaarks (Slip of the finger re 116)

Ideally I will want to do her as the Cag bird but some photos would be great for reference as I cannot find any decal packs for the squadron so I will have to hand paint the squadron specific stuff.

I painted this several years ago, then lost it!, so this is a scan of a not very good photo

I wonder if they ever did fly together. On a sadder note 111 sqdn is due to disband next month, they are based just along the road from me at RAF Leuchars.

Thanks Brian the problem I am having is finding them in 1/48th scale, plenty in 1/72nd or 1/144th but not in my scale.

Your first photo of the tied down aircraft is interesting as I am scratch building a deck section to mount it on and had assumed the tie down points were fairly regular but on this shot they seem to be rather haphazard and dependant on other deck equipment.

Once I have the tie down points and chains and chocks all done then the more cosmetic touches will be done, Hoses and maintenance gear possibly a carrier deck tractor or fire tractor and boarding ladders, weapon loaders and remove before flight tags and of course some personnel, most of these are resin kit from Verlinden.

Agree with you there Mitch - makes me remember afresh the launches/landings/mishaps on Hermes and the days when we could boast ten plus Aircraft Carriers with Aircraft and the Destroyer screens to protect them.

Here you are Sir, pics from one of my posts on the Ark Royal thread. The navigator of Sea Vixen 013 doing a quick escape and runner because he saw smoke in his compartment. The hatch had already been jettisoned. (pics top left and bottom right). No. 014 had already landed safely.

PS; Re Nav' sitting in a dark hole:- IIRC he (the Navigator) did have a window of sorts, it can be seen roughly above the roundel.

Brian that is not exactly true - you were simply asked to cut the number down to occasional pictures.
We are after all a naval history forum. When pictures directly relate to carrier aviation and are worth posting then fair enough but we are not a Jet Aircraft Forum.

We have to keep one eye on the amount of pictures/photos the forum has room to carry. Also I have to take into account what it is our members really want to see. Dont get me wrong I have enjoyed seeing some of your pictures as have a few others on this thread. [I did start it after all!]

If you hover your mouse over any picture in the forum you will see how many members have clicked on to it to either view or download it.
On average 2 or 3 people have done this for your aircraft pictures rather than the usual 20-30+ for a warship/submarine picture.
That is not meant to be a criticism but a reflection of our members preference for warship/naval pictures.

Also you filled 5 thread pages full of them before I said anything - far from a few!!

We are after all the World Naval Ships Forum!

Perhaps any member who wishes to see more of Brians pictures send him a PM with their email address and if Brian has the time he might be prepared to email some on to you?

Also I should remind everyone that we also have an excellent thread in existence started by Alan Benn that is intended for Naval Aircraft.

http://www.worldnavalships.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4068

So any pictures/discussions on Sea Harriers/Bucanneers/Sea Vixens/Gannets, etc should from now on be kept solely in there.

When I started the Jet Aircraft thread as you can see by my original photos/pictures I intended this to be more for non-naval aviation.

I appreciate there is and has been an overlap but at least from now on we will keep naval aircraft in the thread I have linked to above and leave this one to non naval Jets!

In either case as we have an abundance of aircraft pictures I again ask contributors of pictures to help by concentrating on quality rather than quantity. Better a single excellent photograph rather than posting many that are either small or easily obtainable elsewhere from other internet sites.

As usual all I ever try to achieve is the impossible task of keeping everybody happy. Nothing difficult or anything! :D

Not many jets at this years Sunderland International Airshow on 30th & 31st July 2011, due to "Operational Commitments". However, here are some of a Vampire, the Vulcan, and some Hawker Hunters that did take part.

Jim: Thanks for the photographs of XH558 - I have to get to see/hear her flying again, if not this year - then next year - now she has secured enough money to ensure she will be kept flying for another 12 months.

I have heard plently of amazing aircraft, I have heard plenty of loud aircraft and then of course I have heard the Vulcan - truly an amazingly loud aircraft!!

Again out of all the aircraft I have ever heard in my life only the Lightning ever came close to equalling it soundwise.

If only we had a Lightning restored in full flying condition able to do the airshows in the sameway as the Vulcan.

Although I understand that a couple have been fully restored in the UK the CAA [CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY] would never give permission for them to ever fly or do anything more than a "fast taxi run". :(

So sadly the only place on Earth where it is still possible to see Lightnings fly is at Thunder City, Cape Town, South Africa.

I understand they have managed to keep 3 of them in full flying condition.
[There were 4 but one was tragically lost on 14th Nov 2009 at a SAAF airshow].

[Note: I am totally gutted as I have just read that the whole Thunder City operation - 3 Lightnings as well as 3 Buccaneers, 7 Hunters and other jets have now ceased all flying and the future of the whole collection has been mothballed and is open to doubt...].

jbryce1437

I agree about the Lightning Terry. I recall passing one some years ago near Newark/Grantham that was in a scrapyard next to the A1 trunk road. I think the Vulcan has been pencilled in for next years show.
Probably the plane that sticks in my mind, from the air shows at Sunderland over the years, was a Eurofighter. There was no cloud at all for that particular show and it shot in from the right then turned and flew vertically until it could be seen no more. I often wonder if he landed on the moon:D

I have just found this photograph of an RAF Phantom FGR2 which I have owned for years [the photograph not the aircraft!].

I think it was taken in Germany during the late 1970s. The aircraft shown is XV437 from 92 Squadron which met her end on 18th Oct 1988 after suffering engine problems near Holzminden Germany.

From what I can find out both pilots escaped uninjured after ejecting at 2,000ft.

Reading the recent Vulcan posts reminded me of an unforgettable day in 1976at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall when twenty of them arrived one after the other - a very impressive sight!

Foolishly, a couple of days later, I stood on the airfield without ear defenders when nineteen of them roared away into the Cornish sky - a rather painful experience!

Sorry Terry, the RAF weren't too keen on 'unofficial' cameras in those days'. For several years I've searched for photos of the event in the hope that as the aircraft were on the ground for a a whole weekend they must have been noticed by many local camera owners. So far though, I've drawn a blank!

Out of interest, also at St Mawgan that weekend were our home based Nimrods of 42 Sqn and 236 OCU, and our Canberras of 7 Sqn. Parking was at a premium!

Been to Blackpool for the day and around 4pm watched the Red Arrows display out at sea, in beautiful sunshine and stiff off shore breeze. the display line was just off shore to seaward of the North, Central & South piers, in fact the entire length of the golden mile & some!!!!!!

This years' display in a word, was:- S P E C T A C U L A R:):)

I have seen their excellent performances at various places over a number of years, but this was something else. I guess it all lasted about 20 minutes in total, before they joined up with the lead plane trailing smoke and dissappeared over the Irish Sea towards the I o M.

A huge crowd witnessed, for free, the complete formation, 5's, 4's, pairs, opposing singletons, inverted pairs, inverted 4's, bomb bursts the lot.

Only got a few pics on my phone, but I will get them on the thread in the not too distant future.

Well done the Royal Air Force!!

60 and 64 Squadrons had Javelins at RAF Tengah. During Confrontation, they used to put up a dawn patrol.

Javelins were incredibly noisy aircraft and everyone was awake after the two aircraft had taxied by and taken off. I don't think anyone missed breakfast!

A beautiful Aiircraft of my childhood years ..Gloster Javelin......

When I was at Daedalus I was told that the RAF brought some Javelins into the airfield there for dismantling and shipment to somewhere in the Middle East. In order to get them in to Daedalus the airfield staff had to lower the seaward fence to the airfield so they could use the entire length of the runway, which was only just long enough. All this because there was one stage of the journey to their destination which was too long for them.
Beautiful looking aircraft. Twin RR Avons I believe, and a similar radar to the Sea Vixen.

The DH110, from which the Sea Vixen was developed, was a competitor to the Javelin for the RAF all weather fighter order.

Sapphires is correct.

Under certain weather conditions, these engines used to suffer from a phenomenon called centreline closure.

I believe that the Mk1 Victor also had Sapphires. I passed through RAF Gan, in the Indian Ocean, in the 1960s and a Victor had made an emergency landing there, having undergone centreline closure on three of its four engines, the problem no doubt getting the undivided attention of the entire aircrew!

Thanks for that Black Bat. I have now been and looked at the Gloster Javelin website, which will prevent me from asking any more stoopid questions.
