A memorial was dedicated at Whangarei Heads at 11am on 14 May, 70 years to the day and hour after the sinking of HMNZS Puriri by a German mine. Five were killed, including the CO, Lt. Cdr. Douglas Blacklaws RNZNVR while 25 were rescued by HMNZS Gale.
Puriri was the only NZ warship sunk in NZ waters by enemy action
