A memorial was dedicated at Whangarei Heads at 11am on 14 May, 70 years to the day and hour after the sinking of HMNZS Puriri by a German mine. Five were killed, including the CO, Lt. Cdr. Douglas Blacklaws RNZNVR while 25 were rescued by HMNZS Gale.

Puriri was the only NZ warship sunk in NZ waters by enemy action

As the Royal New Zealand Navy did not come into being until October 1 1941, Puriri was prefixed HMS

Well spotted Geoff ! So were Achilles, Leander etc. but as Kiwi ships I have called them all HMNZS for simplicity.
