Hi chaps and chapesses..

Viv has a serious question to ask of all you knowledgable people out there.

Have been "trawling" thru the Navy lists today at the Portsmouth Library.
My Grandfather Charles Stephen Grigson was made up to Artificer Engineer in 1913 and in Dec 1921 he was made up to Warrant Engineer and in Jan 1923 to Commisioned Engineer. His final commision was to Lt (E) in Nov 1929.
Right my questions are: (1) Would this be the natural progression thru the ranks around this time (2) Where would he have been before those dates.i.e 1912 and before (3) Is it a general rule when an Officer retires from the RN he is automatically given the next rank up.

I also have a list of ships in which he served but I will look up their history myself on the appropriate websites.

Also have obtained birth certificates of my mother and aunt and my other Grandfather, Dalson Jory Stanton is listed in 1910 as an electrican on board HMS Jupiter and by 1914 he was an Electrical Artificer. Again basically the same questions as before.

Sorry this is a bit of along post but I am confident you can help.

Thanks

There were 5 grades of Engine Room Artificer and two of Chief ERA, as well as the Boy ERA rating mentioned. Is it specified which grade he was in 1913, as he seems to have been promoted through the ranks rather quickly. But then again, if memory serves, those who achieved Warrant Rank were singled out fairly early on for their abilities.

Thanks for that info...
Cannot find him in the Navy Lists pre 1913 and do not know where to look other than in The National Archives. He would have been 27/28 by then and on HMS Impregnable and his first posting was to HMS Minotaur on 9/08/1913.

Thanks

Yours was the only reply on the original...

In case you didn't know, your grandfather was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander (E) on the retired list from 18 October, 1937.

Ah.... that is interesting.
I could find no trace of him in The Navy Lists after Feb 1933. I presume he would have retired then but got a promotion from the retired list in 1937 ? I am not very proficient in these matters.....

Thanks

This was from The Times and The London Gazette in 1937. He was listed as Lieutenant (E) retd. so he must have already left the service by then. Had a quick scan through for D.J. Stanton but nothing there I'm afraid, which is slightly unusual.

I am learning new things everyday... are events like Naval Promotions etc printed in the Times and london Gazette ?
Am putting all these "search " threads into a little book for all future reference.
What did everyone do before the " the tinternet" ? In dusty old libraries on a Saturday afternoon I presume ! The exception being on 6 Nations Saturday, yes I have been reading your biography......... Oh dear WHAT has happened to the England performance in the last 2 matches... talk about rudderless!!

Our Rugby performance has been the reverse of that timeless comfort to every Briton; "England loses every battle but the last one". We lost to the Welsh and damn near lost to Italy. It's driven me to start watching Rugby League which is truly sinful.

As to promotions and the like; officers' promotions were published in the London Gazette as a matter of course. The Navy List technically isn't always accurate, as information had to be submitted to the editors, so there's always the possibility of an omission.

In The Times a lot of the details from the Gazette are reproduced, and also MANY MANY appointments are listed too, for both officers and senior rates. The online records of The Times upto 1985 are available online to most library card holders in the UK - utterly invaluable resource.

Have just registered with the London Gazette so it is going to be a useful resource for me as might double check all my Grandfather's promotions etc.
I will also check out The Times in my local library here in Portsmouth.

Thanks for all your help.
