View Full Version : First submersable to sink an enemy ship
I'll put here since it occured in North America, but the vessel was flagged with the ensign of the Confederate States of America, not the US Navy.
The CSS Hunley sank the USS Housatonic 17 Feb 1864 outside Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The Hunley was lost in the attack.

Fantastic Jeff. An interesting article. Not a lot of room inside her for the crew.
Have you been to see it by any chance?
Here is the Confederate Navy Jack Jeff. Thought you could use it.
No, I've never seen it, other than pictures.
Interesting you put the Confederate Naval Ensign up. I am a Southerner through and through and I had many ancestors to fight for the Lost Cause. I resist efforts by some around here to trivialize the effort those men made for what they thought was right at the time. I have filled out paperwork to join The Sons of Confederate Veterans (http://www.scv.org/) and am awaiting approval.
That flag is called the Southern Cross around here and many yahoos fly it as their attempt to show Southern pride. They think that they are flying the Confederate Battle Flag, which was used by the Army (and not the civilian government) and was similar to the flag you posted, except for the Battle Flag was square and the blue in the flag was dark blue as shown here:

The Naval Ensign was rectagular and the blue was a lighter shade of blue, as shown here:

They do not realize that the flag they call the Battle Flag is incorrect, as the one they fly is rectangular and it shows their ignorance about their own culture. It is shown here.

This flag is the center of much discord in the US and especially the South and for the most part arguments ensue when it is displayed (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1421793/posts). It has only the past 10 years or so been removed from the tops of state capital buildings in most Southern States. I did not support it flying over the state capital, as it never flew there during the war and from a historical point of view was incorrect. The Confederate national flag flew, but not on the dome as it had over the latter half of the 20 century, but on pole on the portico.
I'm off thread, so I will hush. I hope you have enjoyed your US history lesson.

Lets just leave them where they are Rom. If you keep them seperate, that way each of you gets the credit for starting the threads. Besides they are quite different posts really. No problem.

Actually I hadn't, rom. I'll go and look at it.
Edit---I guess it was coincidental.
I had been reading about the Hunley on my own and decided to post about it. GMTA! :D
It was 1864---Wild fingers on the keyboard as the war was almost over by Feb 1865. I'll edit my above post. Thanks!
