Thanks Rod , your good wishes are really appreciated.
No doubt your daughter has kept you informed about the earthquake. If not I have several posts in the 'Shore Leave' forum, and also in the NZ Naval History forum.

Navy fleet to converge on Wellington Harbour
Last updated 17:31 28/09/2011

Almost every vessel in the Royal New Zealand Navy will sail into Wellington Harbour tomorrow, providing a "once in a lifetime" chance to see the fleet.

Ten ships converged on Cook Strait last night in preparation for their arrival in Wellington for the Navy's 70th Anniversary.

The ships gathered in the early hours of Tuesday morning and during the night the fleet split into two to practise night-time manoeuvres.

Exercises continued today and will conclude tomorrow morning when the ships enter the harbour.

After celebrations are completed on Monday, the ships will leave Wellington for operations and exercises in South East Asia, the Solomon Islands and around New Zealand’s coast.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see almost all the ships of the Navy in one place at one time," said Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Tony Parr.

Navy ships usually operated solo or in pairs.

The ships will berth in the inner harbour and will be open to the public during the weekend after arrival. On Saturday, October 1, about 400 Navy personnel will parade down Lambton Quay following a ceremony at Parliament to change the Navy's Queen's Colour, a ceremonial flag symbolising the Navy's relationship with the Queen.

On Monday October 3 the fleet will anchor in formation in the harbour and the ships will be reviewed by Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae. The vessels will then depart for operations in South East Asia, the Solomon Islands and around the New Zealand coast.

King George VI gave approval on 1 October 1941 for the title Royal New Zealand Navy to be used.

Ships scheduled to participate are: frigates Te Mana, Te Kaha; replenishment vessel Endeavour, multirole sealift vessel Canterbury; offshore patrol vessels Otago and Wellington; inshore patrol vessels Pukaki, Rotoiti, Taupo, Hawea; hydrographic vessel Resolution. The diving support vessel Manawanui will remain in Auckland.

Here are some photos I grabbed while the ships were in Wellington for the 70th celebrations. Captions are self-explanatory.

There are some shots of the fleet in Cook Strait here:

and film:

This clip has the Guard and Colour ceremony outside Parliament, the march through Wellington, and - most importantly - some good footage of the ships at sea.

Well, what 70th. birthday the RNZN put on for New Zealand. A weekend for all to remember, whether Navy or civilian.

Eleven ships took part in a Fleet Concentration and exercises in Cook Strait 26 to 28 September. On the 29th. the fleet carried out a ceremonial entry into Wellington Harbour, firing a gun salute to the Governor General. All ships then berthed alongside so the people could get up close and personal.

On the birthday, 1 October, the ships'companies formed an armed colour guard and marched formally through the streets of Wellington to Parliament Suare where a new Queen's Colour was presented to the RNZN.

On 2 October a service was held in the Cathedral of St. Paul.

All ships were open to visitors over the weekend and 23, 000 people took the opportunity to tour the ships.

On Monday under grey skies the Fleet anchored in the Harbour for a review by the Governor General. In heavy rain the ships' companies cheered him as he passed in HMNZS Resolution. Ships then sailed to resume their operational tasks.

A memorable and remarkable operational visit which will be long remembered.
BZ to the RNZN for a splendid performance for New Zealand.
