If this isn't the correct list could someone redirect me and has any one got any hints on what is the next step that I should take in following my grandfather's voyages.

Hi Jenny, I too have an ancester on this ship - Petty Officer Alfred McCoy. I have been round the Naval Website and cant get any info for this timeline either. It seems that this vessell didnt exist until the 1930's????
It would be great if anybody out there had some info they could let us have.

I think this is the Repulse that you are after:-

http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/hms_repulse.htm

Built at Pembroke dockyard part of the Naval Defence Act Programme of 1890.
Launched 27th February 1892. Commissioned at Portsmouth in April 1894 and served in the Channel Squadron In her last years she served in Home waters and was eventually scrapped in 1911.

If you look at the above site there is plenty about her and quite a few pictures.

Regards Bob.

Hi Jenny and tmj144

If your Alfred McCoy was born in Devonport, Devon on 4 November 1868 and his service record number was 126795 his service record is available from The National Archives on line facility at the cost of £3.50. Please see ADM188/169 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=7368349&queryType=1&resultcount=1

Unfortunately I cannot locate a record for Alexander Frederick Knapp although if you have the correct name a record for this man should exist.

There is a record for Frederick Knapp official number 200758 born in Bethnal Green, London on 4 December 1880. However this man enlisted as a seamen or communications rating and not as an engineer. You mention in your posting that he appeared in the English Census of 1901 as being on board HMS REPULSE as a seaman and then later you mention the the oral family history says that he was an engineer. The two are incompatible if applied to his service in the Royal Navy. He could of course have become an engineer after leaving the navy.

If this is the right man his record is also available on line at a cost of £3.50. See ADM188/348 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6925192&queryType=1&resultcount=46

My grandfather, Pte Charles Edwards, Royal Marine Light Infantry was on board HMS Repulse when she departed Chatham on 25 April 1894. The ship returned to base on 22 May 1897. Can someone help with the history of this voyage. I would like to know where my grandfather had sailed to etc, and his experiences.

Thanks in advance

In actual fact none of the pictures I have of this Repulse are what I would describe as really good.

These are amongst the better ones I have got IMO.

Thanks Terry for all of the pictures. It's good to put a "face" to the cuttings.

There is something about the ships, just before and just after the turn of the century that the new Daring's just haven't got. But times change and, unfortunately, so does the designs of warships.
