HMS Belfast sent in by Warren Swaine |
HMS Belfast pictured
c.1953
I
served on the Belfast throughout the Korean war, from 1950 to 1953 in
fact, and she did not have the lattice masts fitted until we
delivered her to Devonport dockyard for conversion for nuclear warfare in
1953, when they stripped the old 'open' Bridge from her, together with the tripod
masts, and converted her to 'as you see her today. Tony Gatton Thanks
to Tony for narrowing down the approximate date we had given this
photograph to post 1953.

ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET LORD LEWIN...... My father was Terry Lewin,
ultimately he became
Admiral of the Fleet Lord Lewin whose last appointment was as Chief of the
Defence Staff at the time of the Falklands conflict. He died in January
1999
after which I passed the major part of his "important effects"
to the National
Maritime Museum (where he had also acted as head of the trustees). His
life has
been well covered in Richard Hill's authorised biography "Lewin of
Greenwich"
which is still in print and a good read. Now I am collating other
materials about him and
would particularly like to hear from all and any former colleagues, ship's
companies, national servicemen, anyone, with stories, memories and
recollections about him. I am particularly interested in sea jobs (but
anything
is welcome) which in order from 1939 were;- Belfast, Valliant,
Ashanti, Chequers, Corunna, HMY Britannia, Urchin, Tenby, Hermes. I
am aware that unless I collect these stories now
they will soon be lost so please, all of you, try to remember
something!
Many thanks, Tim Lewin

HMS BELFAST.. HOWARD ANDREW COOKE (Andy).. I was wondering if anyone
could help me confirm that my uncle Andy served on HMS Belfast while she
was in Korea. He would have been 71 on December 26th 2002 but passed away
on 31st October. I am trying to put together a remembrance for my Aunt.

HMS Belfast by Robert Taylor.
At the outbreak of World War II, H.M.S. Belfast had already joined the Home Fleet operating out of Scapa Flow. Patrolling north of the Faeroes in October 1939 she came across and captured the German liner Cap Norte. This success was short-lived, however, when she struck a mine, the explosion breaking her back. After repairs and modernisation she was the best-equipped cruiser afloat. Later she went on to play an important role in the Normandy Landings of June 1944.
Signed limited edition of 1000 prints. Paper size 24 inches x 20 inches (61cm x 51cm). Price £75.00 Signed by Sir Frederick Parham.
