As the Suez crisis worstened in 1956, 8 Sqn's De Havilland Venoms found themselves in demand to attack enemy installations and aircraft on the ground from their base at Khormaksar in Aden. Two of the type are shown here, glinting in the sun above their base.

Shortly after mid day on 26th August 1940, a Bolton-Paul Defiant of 264 Sqn claimed a victory that was to make history many decades later. Dornier Do.17Z2, Wk No 1160 of 7/III KG.3 had been part of a raiding force sent to attack targets in Essex. Attacked from below, the Do.17 suffered terminal damage and came to rest in the shallow waters of the Goodwin Sands, near Deal in Kent. Two of her crew died in the incident, but two others survived and became prisoners of war. In June 2013, over seventy years later, 5K+AR was raised from the water to be put on display at the RAF Museum in Hendon, becoming the only example of its type to survive anywhere in the world.

Equipped with the experimental Monica IIIE detection device, Hawker Tempest EJ535 was deployed to the Fighter Interception Unit at Newchurch for evaluation in July 1944. Originally developed as the AN/APS 13, Monica had been intended as a rear-looking device to warn crews of attacks from behind. Now modified to face forward, it became a valuable aid in the battle against Hitler's terror weapons, notably the V-1 Flying Bomb. In the hands of the Fighter Interception Unit's then Commanding Officer Joseph Berry, this became a winning combination with no fewer than 52 Doodlebugs falling to Berry's guns - on one occasion, seven V1s being shot down by Berry in a single night.

In February 1945, 850 square miles of volcanic rock became the most strategically important island in the South Pacific. From Iwo Jima heavy bombers would be able to raid Japanese cities almost at will. Recovering a vehicle in Helmand. A support dumper truck has edged over to the side of the track which has given way under the weight. Two REME soldiers are pulling out the tow-rope (which is made of metal cables) and will attach this to the stranded vehicle. every vehicle will have a top-gunner, heavily armed with an array of weapons - usually the GPMG. When the convoy is stationary for any period of time they are at their most vulnerable to attack, so speed is of the essence to get the convoy on its way again.

In 1485, the Lancastrian contender for the throne of England, Henry Tudor, sailed from France with a small force of mainly continental mercenaries determined to wrestle the crown from Richard III. Gathering many supporters along the way he eventually arrived at Bosworth with an army numbering 5000 against Richards 8000. Things began well enough for Richard but it became apparent during the battle that the neutral Stanley Brothers, Sir William Stanley and Lord Thomas Stanley and their men who had remained on the sidelines, had elected to fight for Henry. Richard charged for Henry in person but was overwhelmed and killed. He was the last English King to die in battle. Although not the final battle of the War of the Roses, the victory for Henry at Bosworth secured the crown and began the Tudor dynasty.

The recovery of LCpl Edwards Warrior, Gonji Vakuf, Bosnia, 13th January 1993. On 13th January 1993 there was severe fighting in the town of Gornji Vakuf, when a column of armoured vehicles of B Company, 1st Battalion The 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment arrived. Lance Corporal Edwards was the driver of a Warrior, call sign Two One. His driver's hatch was open, and as he crossed the bridge over the river a sniper shot him. His Warrior veered towards the left and came to a halt. Inside the vehicle, the soldiers were unable to contact the driver. An MRRV (Mechanized Repair and Recovery Vehicle) drove forward in front of the Warrior. Under intense small arms fire, Corporal Bancroft emerged from his hatch and clambered across the roof of his vehicle, and down onto the ground to attach a towbar to the Warrior. The Warrior was recovered, with the mortally wounded driver and the soldiers still inside it. Shortly afterwards, when I was accompanying a patrol in two Warriors, I visited this spot. We dismounted and I was able to sketch the buildings and the damaged railings of the bridge. Lance Corporal Edwards was attached to The Cheshires from 1st Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers. A memorial plaque was later erected to his memory beside the bridge.
