HMS Frobisher

Name : HMS Frobisher
Laid Down : 2nd August 1916
Launched : 20th March 1920
Completed : 20th September 1924
Type : Cruiser
Class : Hawkins
Builder : Devonport
Country : UK

Fate : Scrapped 1949

His Majesty’s Dockyard Devonport launched this Hawkins class heavy cruiser on 20 March 1920 and she entered service in the Royal Navy on 20 September 1924 After commissioning, she served with the Mediterranean Fleet as flagship to the 1st Cruiser Squadron, with a temporary detachment to the China Station in 1926. From 1927 she carried a catapult on the quarter-deck, together with a crane, to operate a small aircraft. After a refit in 1929 she joined the Atlantic Fleet, but joined the Reserve Fleet in November 1930 until conversion to Cadet Training Ship in 1932, which involved the removal of her armament. In early 1939 the cruiser went back into reserve until January 1940 when she began an extensive refit, which included rearming her.

In March 1942 she joined the 4th Cruiser Squadron of the Eastern Fleet operating, carrying out patrol and convoy escort duties in the Indian Ocean. In May 1943 she entered the dry dock at Simonstown, South Africa. In March 1944 FROBISHER returned to the U.K. In June she took part in Operation NEPTUNE, the amphibious phase of D-Day. Later that month she deployed as a depot ship for the motor torpedo boats participating in the operation. In August a long range torpedo fired from German E-boats in Seine Bay damaged her, along with the repair ship ALBATROSS. After this she spent her remaining years as a Cadet Training Ship again, partly disarmed. No longer required for service, she arrived at Newport on 11 May 1949 to be broken up for scrap by Cashmore.

Set in a spectacular mountain scene, Nicolas Trudgians print records the last days of air combat as World War II drew to a close. The most feared of the Luftwaffes remaining units were those equipped with the remarkable Me262 fighter jet, but they were vulnerable to attack during take-off and landing. Commanding JV-44, General Galland countered the threat by employing Fw190 Dora 9s to fly top cover. Nicolas Trudgians painting depicts the colourful Fw190 of Hptm Waldermar Wubke of JV-44 as he prepared to scramble Red Three at Ainring airfield in may 1945.

Published 2000.

Signed by two Luftwaffe Knights Cross holders who flew the Fw190D-9 operationally during World War II.

In 1275 BC there were two superpowers in the ancient near east, in the south the Egyptians and in the north the Hittites from Anatolia in modern day central Turkey. A clash between these two powers was inevitable. The Egyptian Pharaoh Rameses II marched an army north into Syria to confront the Hittites and their allies under King Muwatallis. Reaching Kadesh Rameses camped under the walls of the city with his leading division, Amun, and awaited the arrival of the rest of his army. Poor intelligence had led Rameses to believe the Hittites were far to the north, in fact they were only 2 - 3 miles away. Muwatallis delivered a surprise attack against Rameses camp but the Egyptians managed to hold on until re-enforcements arrived. Despite retreating from the field after a day long battle it was Rameses who claimed a victory. The two armies never clashed again and eventually a peace treaty was signed between the Egyptians and the Hittites.

The honours of Meeanee and Hyderbad are shared with some Indian Regiments. That of Scinde is borne by The Cheshire Regiment alone.
