The Douglas Dakota was undoubtedly one of the most important allied aircraft of the Second World War. The aircraft served in a variety of roles including paratroop-dropping, glider-towing, casualty evacuation to transporting all sorts of materials from food to weapons of war. It did it all and in doing so, helped win the war.

Corsairs of VMF 121 provide close air support to the US landings on Rendova, June 30, 1943. Fiercely contested, the invasion force was heavily attacked by Zero fighters and Mitsubishi G4M1 Betty bombers, flying from their base at Rabaul. Dog-fighting at tree-top height, VMF 121 Corsairs rip into a bunch of Betty bombers as they try to make their escape following their attack on shipping. On fire, the Betty in the foreground is doomed, and will shortly become one of 19 Japanese aircraft accounted for by VMF 121. Other Marine fighter units brought the total this day to a staggering 58 enemy aircraft destroyed.

Having already scored his first victory by shooting down an I-15 during the Spanish Civil War, Ennio Tarantola was to survive World War II with a total of eleven victories. His involvement in the Second World War began, however, as one of the elite dive bomber force, 102° Gruppo <i>'Bombardamento a Tuffo'</i> which was made up of 209a and 239a Squadriglie, flying Junkers JU-87 Stukas. It was Tarantola who scored a direct hit on the destroyer HMAS Waterhen on 24th June 1941, as shown here, crippling the ship and leaving it foundering to be finished off by subsequent German air raids.

Eight minutes after the gliders had touched down at LZ-Z the first of the paratroops started to arrive at 1353. Thirty six C47s over DZ-X dropped the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment at 1403. On the ground are the discarded chutes of the 2nd Battalion dropped ten minutes earlier. In the middle distance can be seen the blue smoke used to identify DZ-X, left by the 21st Independent Para Company. Dropped by the 14 and 59 Sqn/ 61 Troop Carrier Group which had taken off from Barkston Heath, Lincolnshire, the 2nd and 3rd Para Battalions, which dropped slightly earlier had enplaned at Saltby airfield. Between 1353 and 1408 2276 paratroops jumped at an altitude of between 700 to 900ft..

Already ravaged by incoming shot from the combined French and Spanish fleets as she approached the enemy line, HMS Victory found herself under intense attack from the French 3rd Rate 74-gun Redoutable. The two ships became entangled, grappling irons went across and the most terrible artillery battle commenced. Admiral Lord Nelson was fatally wounded by a shot from the Redoutables mizzen top before it was brought crashing down. Now the British three-decker, the 98-gun Temeraire appeared outboard of the Redoutable and began pouring further shot into her, the little French ship dwarfed by two mighty British vessels. But still she fought on, refusing to strike her colours. Of all the ships at Trafalgar, Redoutable sustained the highest casualties with 478 killed and 81 wounded. Depicted from left to right are HMS Temeraire, Redoutable and HMS Victory.

The P & O cruise liner Canberra lies in San Carlos Water, Falkland Islands, in May 1982, looking very weather-beaten after her punishing journey south during the conflict with Argentina, whilst HMS Argonaut keeps a watching vigil by her side. Both Argonaut and Canberra repeatedly came under air attack in San Carlos Water during the disembarkation of 42 Commando, both surviving the encounters, unlike the unfortunate HMS Ardent which was hit and sunk.

A splendid little war was how John Hay, ambassador to Britain, described the Spanish-American war of 1898. Though the war was small in scope it was large in consequences; it promoted the regeneration of the American Navy and the emergence of the United States as a major world power. Fought primarily at sea, the war created an American naval legend in its opening encounter between the pacific squadrons of Spain and the United States at Manila Bay on the 1st of May 1898. At sunrise Admiral Dewey, leading the American fleet in his flagship the USS Olympia, had caught the Spanish fleet, under Admiral Patricio Montojo, by surprise - still anchored off Sangley Point at Manila Bay in the Philippine Islands. Defeat for the Spanish was total and heralded the end of a once extensive Spanish empire in the Americas. Montojos flagship, Reina Cristina, is seen here under fire from the Olympia.

The heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire is brought up to sink the blazing wreck of the Bismarck with torpedoes at around 10:30 hours on the morning of May 27th 1941. The once proud German ship had been ruthlessly pounded into a twisted and burning wreck by the British battleships Rodney and King George V. HMS Dorsetshire and HMS Maori combed the area of the sinking for survivors, between them picking up a total of 110 out of an original complement of 2,300.

This is a stunning print of one of the most celebrated paintings of the first world war. A wonderful depiction of human emothion n times of conflict. Matanias work shows a young soldier tenderly cradling the head of his stricken horse, even as shells burst around him, and a comrade urges him onward. Matania was commissioned in 1916 by the Blue Cross fund to produce a picture illustrating the heroisn of the animals involved in the war. The blue cross fund has been set up by Our Dumb Friends league in 1912, to assists animals during the Balken war, and it later paid £130 for the painting. This was money well spent as the scene, subtitled An incident on the road to a battery position in Southern Flanders, achieved iconic status. The work was printed in numerous publications thoughout the world, with thw Belgium magazine Le Grande Guerre asserting, below the image Les Anglais ont pour leurs chevaux une grande amiti (The English have a great love for their horses). Over one million horses saw service with the british Army during the First world war.
