His Majesty’s Dockyard Portsmouth launched this modified Leander class light cruiser on 26 July 1934 and she entered service in the Royal Navy on 6 July 1936. After workup she became flagship of the 6th Cruiser Squadron on the Africa Station , mainly involved in "Showing the flag" cruises. On the 3 December 1938 the Commander in Chief transferred to HMS NEPTUNE and AMPHION left Simonstown for the last time. She arrived at Portsmouth on 15th December 1938 where she paid off and underwent a long refit. The Australian government purchased the ship and commissioned her into the Royal Australian Navy as HMAS PERTH at Portsmouth on 29 June 1939.
