HMS London served in the Mediterranean during 1906 and returned to the Nore in 1907, becoming flag ship of the Channel Fleet June 1908, and the flag ship to the Atlantic Fleet in 1910. Reduced to the 3rd battle squadron in 1912 but later transferred to the 5th battle squadron for experiments with Sea Planes. During these trials a hydro aeroplane took off from a ramp on board HMS London. During the outbreak of world war one she was used for channel patrols until dispatched to the Dardanelles during the early part of 1915. Transferred to the Adriatic in May 1915, and remained at Taranto until 1917. She returned to Britain for conversion to a minelayer, during refitting her forward 12 inch turret and guns were removed and the after turret was replaced by a 6 inch gun. The conversion enabled HMS London to carry 240 mines. She was placed in reserve until 1919 and broken up June 1920. Armament: four 12 inch guns in pairs, twelve 6 inch guns singles, sixteen 12 pdr guns, two 12 pdr guns, six 3 pdr guns, two maxims and four torpedo tubes. Length: 400ft Displacement: 15,000 tons. Speed: 18 knots. Complement: 750 (789 as flagship).
