 In early 1941, many months before Pearl Harbor, an irrepressible bunch of American fighter pilots, together with 200 ground crew, came together and stood alone against the might of the Imperial Japanese Air Force. Under the indomitable command of General Claire Chennault, their task was to keep the vital road link open between the port of Rangoon and the city of Kunming in South West China. A treacherous unpaved track, hacked through mountain terrain and known as the infamous Burma Road, was the only lifeline for supplies into China from the outside world.  With the Japanese hell-bent on its destruction, the Flying Tigers were all that stood between defeat and survival.  With little support from home, and almost without replacement aircraft or spares, the P-40 Tomahawk pilots of the American Volunteer Group - the AVG - became the scourge of the Japanese Air Force and heroes to the people of China. In a six month period of combat, with no more than 50 or 60 serviceable aircraft at anyone time, and invariably heavily outnumbered in the air, they destroyed some 300 Japanese airplanes, damaging and destroying another 300, and causing incalculable damage to Japanese ground forces.  During its brief existence this remarkable group became one of the most successful and famous fighter units of all time. Their short but glorious private war came to an end when on July 4th, 1942 the AVG was absorbed into the USAAF and Chennaults Flying Tigers passed into aviation folklore.    Motivated by the legend of the Flying Tigers,  Nicolas Trudgian has painted one of his finest pictures.  Dominating the foreground is a stunning view of Chuck Olders P-40 - one of the 3rd Pursuit Squadrons, known as Hells Angels - in hot pursuit of a bunch of Zero fighters up ahead. Close by to his left another Flying Tiger finishes off a Zero, already on its way down.  Below the pastoral scene is caught unawares by the sudden approach of fighters, as the fast-moving dogfight hurtles across the landscape.

 Martin B.26 Marauders of the 553rd Bomb Squadron, 386th Bomb Group are depicted approaching the Normandy coast early on 6th June 1944.  These aircraft were among the first to bomb the enemy gun emplacements and reinforcements situated along the beaches in order to help clear the way for the Allied landings that were just hours away at the start of Operation Overlord.  These B.26s carried out low level bombing sorties over Utah Beach, their low altitude being the key to their high level of success and accuracy.  Nearest aircraft is 131576 AN-Z '<i>Dinah Might</i>' now on display at the Utah Beach Museum.

At the outbreak of World War 1, the true potential of the aeroplane as an observation and reconnaissance platform had yet to be fully realised and many types were hurriedly drafted in and put to good use. Whilst the ubiquitous and bird-like Etrich Taube accounted for almost half of Germanys compliment of observation aircraft, the Bavarian army adopted this pusher bipane designed and built by Gustav Otto of Munich. Based on a floatplane of similar configuration and powered by a Rapp engine, this basic machine helped to usher in a new age of aerial reconnaissance. The company of Gustav Otto Flugmuschinen-Werke was later to become AGO Flugzeugwerke GmbH (Actien - Gesellschaft Otto)

 Of the three E-Class cruisers proposed at the end of World War 1, only two were ever completed, Euphrates being cancelled when the war with Germany ended in 1918.  The two sisters, Emerald and Enterprise, enjoyed long and varied careers, the former remaining largely unchanged from her original appearance, the latter being much modified.  The two ships are shown together at anchor off Trincomalie between the wars.

Nelsons annihilation of the French Fleet at Aboukir Bay was complete, but for the escape of Admiral Villeneuve who would again confront his nemesis just seven years later at Trafalgar.  Doubled by the British ships and ravaged by their relentless gunnery, the French faced utter defeat as the battle raged into the night. At the centre of the French line lay the massive three decker L Orient.  The British Alexander positioned herself astern of L Orient and began to fire mercilessly into her fragile stern galleries.  Within a short time, a terrible fire started that raged through her hull, eventually reaching her powder magazine, causing a massive explosion that literally blew L Orient to pieces.  In this scene, shortly before the explosion, Alexander can be seen astern of the burning L Orient, minus her maintop, and trying to move away in the intense heat.  To her port, the British Majestic is also starting to slip away while, in the foreground, the French Franklin is ablaze and threatened with being caught in the imminent blast.  At the extreme right of the picture, crews are racing to remove sails from the British Orion to lessen the risk of fire in the event of L Orients spectacular demise.

 The greatest naval battle of the First World War took place on the 31st of May and the 1st of June 1916, near the Danish province of Jutland.  It was the first and only sea battle between the British and German fleets, and certainly proved to be the clash of the Titans that the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, had long planned.  Decisive victory was claimed by both sides, but, desperately fought though it was, the outcome was indecisive.  The Royal Navy suffered higher losses in both men and ships, but the German fleet never ventured out of harbour to seek battle again.  During the daylight fighting HMS Barham, under Rear Admiral Evan-Thomas, lead the 5th Battle Squadron (Valiant, Warspite and Malaya) and is seen here at 4.50pm exchanging with Hippers battle-cruisers to the south.

 It is September 18th, 1805, off Plymouth.  Led by the 74-gun HMS Thunderer, with HMS Ajax astern, HMS Victory, with Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson aboard, begins her journey south to join the rest of the British fleet off Cadiz where the combined French and Spanish fleets lay blockaded.  This was the prelude to the Battle of Trafalgar and the last time Nelson would see his beloved England.

On January 22nd 1879, during the Zulu War, the small British field hospital and supply depot at Rorkes Drift in Natal was the site of one of the most heroic military defences of all time.  Manned by 140 troops of the 24th Regiment, led by Lieutenant John Chard of the Royal Engineers, the camp was attacke by a well-trained and well-equipped Zulu army of 4000 men, heartened by the great Zulu victory over the British forces at Isandhlwana earlier on the same day.  The battle began in mid afternoon, when British remnants of the defeat at Isandhlwana struggled into the camp.  Anticipating trouble, Chard set his small force to guard the perimeter fence but, when the Zulu attack began, the Zulus came faster than the British could shoot and the camp was soon overcome.  The thatched roof of the hospital was fired by Zulu spears wrapped in burning grass and even some of the sick and the dying were dragged from their beds and pressed into the desperate hand-to-hand fighting.  Eventually, Chard gave the order to withdraw from the perimeter and to take position in a smaller compound, protected by a hastily assembled barricade of boxes and it was from behind this barricade that the garrison fought for their lives throughout the night.  After twelve hours of battle, the camp was destroyed, the hospital had burned to the ground, seventeen British lay dead and ten were wounded.  However, the Zulus had been repulsed and over 400 of their men killed.  The Battle of Rorkes Drift is one of the greatest examples of bravery and heroism in British military history.  Nine men were awarded Distinguished Conduct Medals, and eleven, the most ever given for a single battle, received the highest military honour of all, the Victoria Cross.

First daylight on the 21st October, saw the Royal Navy fleets together at a distance of about 12 miles. The day looked fine, a heavy swell from the west gave warning of an approaching storm. As dawn broke HMS Victory, Nelsons flagship and the rest of the fleet could be found in a shapeless huddle, which soon resolved itself into two divisions. Thus the two fleets prepared themselves for the coming battle which commenced just before noon.

 1st Battalion in action at Escaut Canal, Belgium, May 1940. The last Highland Regiment to wear a kilt in battle, attacking the Germans at the River Escaut.  From the Diary of Captain R. Leah, 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders : Tuesday 21st May : Bn left Ere about 2 a.m. to march back. Fortunately Coy Cmdr. were required for some sort of recce and we went in C.O.s car.  Arrived Taintignies 3 a.m. and self went out again with Wilkie in C.O.s car to look for for C Coy which had gone astray, and to see Q.M. about Bn rations in Wez-Velvain.  Could not find either.  Met the Battalion arriving from Ere when I left the village at 3 a.m.  Got back myself at 4 a.m. found empty house which I entered by window and slept well for 5 hours. Officers mess going in house beside M.T. park, and had good breakfast.  Fairly quiet morning and orders to move this afternoon to Bn assembly position S of Wez-Velvain.  Thence we were directed to Merlin and prepared for counter-attack to drive enemy off Western side of Escaut.

 Objective Brass, 26th February 1991.  At the forefront of the Fusiliers Battle Group throughout the land war was the Recce Platoon.  Once in the desert, it became part of the Reconnaissance Group which was formed to provide a force with an integral anti-tank capability.  Such a unit was able to act independently and defend itself, should the need arise.  The Recce Group was commanded by Major Corin Pearce.  4th Armoured Brigade attacked the enemy formations sequentially, and as the Battle Group paused on Objective COPPER SOUTH, the Reconnaissance Group moved forward to screen the formation and establish the Forming Up Position (FUP) for the forthcoming attack on Objective BRASS.  Corporal Derek McManus of The Queen's Own Highlanders in his CVR(T) Scimitar (callsign Two Three Alpha) encountered an Iraqi command bunker, and ordered an Iraqi to tell those inside to surrender.  The occupants refused, so McManus threw an L2A2 grenade into the doorway of the bunker.  With Corporal Dave Weaver, from his MCT(S) Spartan (callsign Four One Bravo), he moved forward on foot but came under fire from the Iraqi in a trench.  The Scimitar's 30mm Rarden cannon fired a sabot round and Corporal McManus fired his CLAW rifle grenade, but the fire from the trench continued so both he and Weaver rushed back to their vehicles.  With considerable presence of mind, Fusilier Anthony Cassar, the driver of callsign Four One Bravo, stood up in his hatch and fired his rifle, shooting the Iraqi soldier dead.  Captain Guy Briselden, the Milan Platoon Commander, led his men (almost all of whom were Queen's Own Highlanders) on foot to clear the enemy trench system, advancing by fire and movement.  He cleared several bunkers as he and the Highlanders moved through the extensive trench system, which the enemy had had many months to prepare, under the supporting fire of two Warriors.  Many Iraqis subsequently surrendered.  For his inspirational leadership in this exploit of arms Captain Briselden was awarded the Military Cross.

 Since his arrival from Holland in 1998 Jaap Stam has arguably been Manchester Uniteds most consistent performer. After being voted Dutch Player of the Year at the end of the 1997-98 season a great deal of expectation arose from the Old Trafford faithful as they waited to see if the Dutchman would justify his 10.75 million pound transfer fee. However, Stam has far exceeded any expectations the supporters may have had. His incredible pace, control and ability to read the game have provided Manchester United with the necessary strength in defence to enable them to play the type of free-flowing attacking football which has become synonymous with the Treble winning side. It is a certainty that with his best still to come Jaap Stam will be a name which is long remembered on the terraces of Old Trafford.
