Pennants : Fate : Ordered as ELEPHANT but name changed to MINOTAUR soon after. Became Training Ship BOSCAWEN in 1904; GANGES 1906; GANGES II 1908. Sold 1922. |
Minotaur Class ironclad built 1863-66. Ships of the class were HMS Minotaur, HMS Agincourt and a half-sister, HMS Northumberland. These Broadside Ironclades were initially proposed as 50 gun armoured frigates. Complement: 705. 10690 tons displacement. Length 407 ft.oa, beam 59 ft. 6 in., draught 27 ft. 9 in. Machinery: Penn 2 cyl. horizontal single expansion trunk engine. Single screw. Speed 14.4 kts. Five masted. Bunkers:750 tons. (1200 miles at 10 kts.). Armament: 4 x 9" RML, 24 x 7" RML, 8 x 24 pdr brass howitzers. Later 17 x 9" RML. |
She commissioned as flagship of the Channel Squadron and remained continuously in commission until 1873 During this period she was in collision with the BELLEROPHON, and the latter was badly damaged. She paid off for refit and rearmament in 1873, and became the first ship of the RN to carry a searchlight. Recommissioned in 1875, again as flagship of the Channel Squadron, this time for twelve years. Paid a brief visit to the Mediterranean in 1882 but arrived off Alexandria one day late for the bombardment. Paid off in 1887 and placed on the non-effective list. |
