HMS Aboukir was a 90-gun second-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy launched in 1848. She was refitted with screw propulsion in 1858 Channel Fleet 1860 under command of Captain C F Schomberg. and was sold in 1877. A monument on Southsea seafront commemorates an outbreak of Yellow Fever between 1873 and 1874. 4 April 1848 Launched as 2nd rate sailing ship at Devonport Dockyard. 25 May 1859 - 9 January 1860 Commanded (from commissioning at Devonport) by Captain Charles Frederick Schomberg, Channel squadron 10 January 1860 - 18 February 1861 Commanded by Captain Douglas Curry, Channel squadron 18 February 1861 - August 1862 Commanded by Captain Charles Frederick Alexander Shadwell, Channel squadron, then (November 1861) Mediterranean, then (February 1862) West Indies 19 September 1862 Commanded by Captain Peter Cracroft, flagship of Commodore Hugh Dunlop, Receiving ship, Jamaica 6 September 1865 - 21 February 1868 Commanded by Commodore Francis Leopold McClintock, Receiving ship, Jamaica 22 February 1868 - 1 December 1869 Commanded by Commodore Augustus Phillimore, Receiving ship, Jamaica 1 December 1869 Commanded by Commodore Richard William Courtenay, Receiving ship, Jamaica 1872 Commanded by Commodore Algernon Frederick Rous De Horsey, Receiving ship, Jamaica 1875 - 20 July 1877 Commanded (until paying off) by Commodore Algernon McLennan Lyons, Receiving ship, Jamaica |
