HMS Hood was of the same general design of the Royal Sovereign Class. Her service was carried out in the Mediterranean until 1904 when she went into the Fleet Reserve at Devonport. From February 1907 until 1910 she was part of the Home Fleet Commissioned Reserve before becoming a receiving ship at Queenstown in 1910 with the removal of her 6 in guns. From 1911 to 1914 she was used as a target and fitted with the first experimental bulges, eventually sunk as a blockship in the south channel Portland Harbour on 4th November 1914. Displacement: 14,150 tons. Horse power: 13,000. Length: 380 ft. Beam: 75ft. Draught: 27' 6". Armament: Four 67 ton guns, ten 6 in guns, ten 6 pounder gun and twelve 3 pounder quick firers, and has a partial composite belt 17 ins thick. Speed 17.5 knots. Complement: 730. |
