On 23rd September 1976, while being fitted out at the Swan Hunter Neptune shipyard at Newcastle upon Tyne, a severe fire on board killed eight workmen and injured a further six. The fire resulted from a build up of oxygen inside the ship, from leaking pipes, and a welders torch ignited the gas. Three decks of the ship were severely damaged in the fire.
