HMS Glory Built by Laird at Birkenhead and laid down on the 1st December 1896 and launched on the 11 March 1899 completed October 1900. Served initially in the China Station as Flagship 1900 to 1905 returning to the UK in 1905, following the Anglo Japanese alliance. stayed with the Channel fleet until 1906 and then went into the commissioned reserve Home Fleet at Portsmouth refitted March 1907 to July 1907 for Boiler overhaul and magazine cooling and the addition of Fire Control. From the August 1907 to April 1909 HMS Glory served in the Mediterranean fleet. returning to the 4th Division (with reduced crew levels. From May 1912 she joined the 3rd Fleet at the Nore transferring to Portsmouth in April 1913 At the outbreak of world war one HMS Glory joined the 8th battle squadron to escort A Canadian Convoy of troops in October 1914, Then joining the north American and West Indies Station as Flagship. In June 1915 she joined the Mediterranean fleet to cover the Suez canal, and Egypt. In 1916 HMS Glory was sent to Archangel as Guard ship and remained at this station until 1919 before returning to Rosyth In 1920 she was renamed HMS Crescent and used as a depot ship Finally being sold to the Breakers in 1920 Displacement: 12,950 tons. Length: 410 ft. Beam: 74 ft. Draught: 26.5 ft. Complement: 750. Armament: four 12 ins guns, twelve 6 ins guns, ten 3 ins guns, six 3 pounder guns and two maxims with four torpedo tubes.

 Oberleutenant Schalls ME 262 of JG7 catches the Australian crewed Lancaster from 5 group dead astern as it lines up for its bombing run on the Hamburg U-Boat pens. Even at this angle the speed of the jet made it difficult to get off more than a few bursts of cannon fire before it passed through the British formation. The episode was witnessed by navigator Cecil Keys in the leading Lancaster QR/Y from 61 squadron on his last raid of the war. Lt. Schall, an ace with 117 kills, and 2nd highest jet ace of the war with 14 victories was killed the following day when his aircraft hit a bomb crater on landing at his base of Parchim.

 Flight Lieutenant Ian <i>Widge</i> Gleed is depicted in his personal Hurricane 1 P2798 (LK-A) of 87 Sqn shooting down a Messerschmitt Bf.110 on 15th August 1940.  Just visible beneath the cockpit of the Hurricane is his mascot, Figaro, shown kicking a swastika.  His aircraft was also easily identifiable by the red flash on its nose, a feature that was retained even when P2798 was painted all black for its night fighter role. Gleed scored many victories before being shot down and killed whilst flying a Spitfire Vc in the Western Desert in April 1943.

 After service in the 96th Infantry Regiment, Smirnov joined the XIX Corps Air Squadron in 1914, shooting down twelve enemy aircraft in the course of two years. When revolution swept through Russia in November 1917, he escaped the Bolsheviks via a White counter-revolutionary route, eventually joining the RAF in England, serving at the Central Flying School at Upavon. He is shown here in his silver Nieuport 17, having just despatched a Roland C.II.

 Pushing the concept of the Spitfire almost to the limit, the sleek F Mk212 represented the ultimate in fighter design at the end of the Second World War.  Powered by the mighty Griffon 61 engine driving a five blade propeller, its armament consisted of four 20mm British Hispano Cannon, two in each wing.  This example is LA200 (DL-E) of 91 Sqn in 1945.

 The Royal Aircraft Factory RE.8 (Reconnaissance Experimental 8), or Harry Tate as its crews affectionately called it, was used throughout the Great War to good effect, but was something of an anachronism when pitted against the more modern machines of the Jastas. However, Lieutenants Rothes Pithey and Rhodes scored a credible 10 victories together, sending down three Pfalz D.IIIs on a single mission on 7th June 1918 flying F6097.

HMS Glowworm, burning severely after receiving hits from the mighty Admiral Hipper, is depicted turning to begin her heroic sacrifice off the Norwegian coast on 8th April 1940. Hugely out-gunned and already crippled, Glowworms captain, Lieutenant-Commander Roope rammed his destroyer into the side of the Admiral Hipper, inflicting a 40 metre rip in its armour belt before drifting away and exploding. 38 British sailors were rescued from the sea and Roope was awarded a posthumous VC for his bravery, the first earned by the Royal Navy in WWII.

 Launched in Barrow in Furness on 22nd August 1929, the Parthian Class submarine HMS Poseidon (P99) was destined to meet a tragic fate on 9th June 1931 when she was inexplicably involved in a collision with a Chinese freighter in the Bohai Sea during exercises in clear visibility.  31 of her crew managed to get into the water before the submarine sank, whilst a further eight escaped from the submerged vessel.  Two of these didn't make it to the surface and one died later in hospital, making a tragic total of 21 deaths in this extraordinary tragedy.  HMS Poseidon is depicted here in happier times, moving off from her depot ship as the night sky closes in.

Nelsons annihilation of the French Fleet at Aboukir Bay was complete, but for the escape of Admiral Villeneuve who would again confront his nemesis just seven years later at Trafalgar.  Doubled by the British ships and ravaged by their relentless gunnery, the French faced utter defeat as the battle raged into the night. At the centre of the French line lay the massive three decker L Orient.  The British Alexander positioned herself astern of L Orient and began to fire mercilessly into her fragile stern galleries.  Within a short time, a terrible fire started that raged through her hull, eventually reaching her powder magazine, causing a massive explosion that literally blew L Orient to pieces.  In this scene, shortly before the explosion, Alexander can be seen astern of the burning L Orient, minus her maintop, and trying to move away in the intense heat.  To her port, the British Majestic is also starting to slip away while, in the foreground, the French Franklin is ablaze and threatened with being caught in the imminent blast.  At the extreme right of the picture, crews are racing to remove sails from the British Orion to lessen the risk of fire in the event of L Orients spectacular demise.

On the 1st of August 1798, thirteen French ships of the line sat anchored in Aboukir Bay off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, in support of Napoleon who was inland with his troops attempting to conquer the country.  As nighttime approached so did Lord Horatio Nelson and the British fleet.  Nelson had been hunting Napoleon at sea for months; at Aboukir Bay he had found the French fleet, trapped and unprepared for battle.  Nelsons audacious plan was to attack the French on their unprotected prot side, the plan had its risks; the whole of the British fleet could run aground in the shallows - but Nelson knew the waters too well.  The Battle of the Nile was one of the most decisive in the history of naval warfare.  By the end of the battle nearly all the French ships were sunk or captured.  The 124-gun flagship - and the pride of the French navy - LOrient, had exploded with such ferocity that it halted the battle for over ten minutes.  Napoleons ability to dominate the region had been crushed, whilst Nelson was to become a hero throughout the whole of Britain.

 D for Donald of 270 squadron, Royal Air Force, out of Freetown, West Africa operating in the Atlantic Ocean. It was during routine operation search that D for Donald surprised U515 on the surface and immediately attacked the submarine. U515 in putting up stiff resistance blew a large hole in the hull of D for Donald and the magazine of the starboard side 0.5 twin Browning was hit and the subsequent shrapnel wounded both blister gunners. U515 escaped but was sunk by an American naval hunter group a year later. D for Donald limped back to base and managed to make the beach before it would sink completely.

The Romans have abducted the daughters of their neighbors, the Sabines.  To avenge this abduction, the Sabines attacked Rome, although not immediately, since Hersilia, the daughter of Tatius, the leader of the Sabines, had been married to Romulus, the Roman leader, and then had two children by him in the interim.  Here we see Hersilia between her father and husband as she adjures the warriors on both sides not to take wives away from their husbands or mothers away from their children.  The other Sabine Women join in her exhortations.

 Under pressure from Stalin to open a second front in Europe, Operation Jubilee was designed ostensibly as a reconnaissance in force on the French coast, to show the feasibility of taking and holding a major defended port for a day, in this case Dieppe. The plan devised by Lord Louis Mountbatten failed due to inadequate naval and air support, carrying out the landing in daylight and general lack of intelligence of the target. Here new Churchill tanks of the 14th Canadian Tank Regiment (The Calgary Regiment), with men of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and Fusiliers Mont-Royals, struggle to fight their way off the beach. Only a handful of men penetrated into the town itself, and eventually the remaining troops were ordered to withdraw. Out of 5086 soldiers who landed only 1443 returned.

 Following the success of several French imports to Highbury, Arsene Wenger again turned to his home country in search of another midfield maestro.  Robert Pires was duly signed from Marseille in July 2000 in a 6 million pound deal.  Robert Pires has adjusted quickly to the English game.  Pires and his love affair with English football comes from the intensity of the game teamed with the passion from the Highbury fans.  On describing the fans' reaction when he scores, he said, <i>It's an unbelievablesensation to be standing on the pitch when the whole crowd erupts.</i>  For a man who played in a European championship final, and who won the World Cup, these words must sound sweet to the Highbury faithful.  Robert Pires received the recognition his talent deserved on winning the Football Writer's Player of the Year Award in the 2001/02 season.

 While dominating the race, a loose wheel nut forced Nigel Mansell into the pits with only 7 laps remaining.  He emerged about 5 seconds behind Senna, and one of the best duels in F1 history ensued, as Mansell quickly closed the gap..  With four laps to go of the tight street circuit at Monaco, Mansell could not get around the McLaren of Senna, and finished just two tenths of a second behind him at the end of the race.
