HMS Glory Built by Laird at Birkenhead and laid down on the 1st December 1896 and launched on the 11 March 1899 completed October 1900. Served initially in the China Station as Flagship 1900 to 1905 returning to the UK in 1905, following the Anglo Japanese alliance. stayed with the Channel fleet until 1906 and then went into the commissioned reserve Home Fleet at Portsmouth refitted March 1907 to July 1907 for Boiler overhaul and magazine cooling and the addition of Fire Control. From the August 1907 to April 1909 HMS Glory served in the Mediterranean fleet. returning to the 4th Division (with reduced crew levels. From May 1912 she joined the 3rd Fleet at the Nore transferring to Portsmouth in April 1913 At the outbreak of world war one HMS Glory joined the 8th battle squadron to escort A Canadian Convoy of troops in October 1914, Then joining the north American and West Indies Station as Flagship. In June 1915 she joined the Mediterranean fleet to cover the Suez canal, and Egypt. In 1916 HMS Glory was sent to Archangel as Guard ship and remained at this station until 1919 before returning to Rosyth In 1920 she was renamed HMS Crescent and used as a depot ship Finally being sold to the Breakers in 1920 Displacement: 12,950 tons. Length: 410 ft. Beam: 74 ft. Draught: 26.5 ft. Complement: 750. Armament: four 12 ins guns, twelve 6 ins guns, ten 3 ins guns, six 3 pounder guns and two maxims with four torpedo tubes.

 Stukas from StG 2 Immelmann, part of the mixed unit Schlachtgeschwader, attack soviet T-34 tanks in an attempt to blunt the soviet 1943 offensives.  Throughout 1943-45, squadrons operating the Ju87G variants equipped with 37mm cannons became effective tank-killers, although in increasingly small numbers.  Despite the success of Stuka tank killers, the losses inflicted on soviet armour were unable to prevent the soviet advance.

 Germanys greatest First World War fighter ace, Baron Von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron is shown departing his Fokker DR.1 Triplane 425/17 after yet another successful sortie.  425/17 was the aircraft in which the Red Baron finally met his end in April of that year. No fewer than 17 of his victories having been scored in his red-painted triplane.

 Arriving too late to take any meaningful part in the war, Dornier's extraordinary Do.335 <i>Pfeil</i> (Arrow) might have made a significant contribution to the war in the air, had it gone into mass production.  Drawing on the company's considerable experience with pull-push engine arrangements, the Do.335 represented a radical change in fighter design, resulting in an aircraft with a top speed of 763 Km/h at 6500m.  Here the seventh of ten Do.335A-Os gets airborne from Oberpfaffenhofen en route for evaluation by the Erprobungskommando 335 in September 1944.

 Equipped with the experimental <i>Monica IIIE</i> detection device, Hawker Tempest EJ535 was deployed to the Fighter Interception Unit at Newchurch for evaluation in July 1944.  Originally developed as the AN/APS 13, <i>Monica</i> had been intended as a rear-looking device to warn crews of attacks from behind.  Now modified to face forward, it became a valuable aid in the battle against Hitler's terror weapons, notably the V-1 Flying Bomb.  In the hands of the Fighter Interception Unit's then Commanding Officer Joseph Berry, this became a winning combination with no fewer than 52 <i>Doodlebugs</i> falling to Berry's guns - on one occasion, seven V1s being shot down by Berry in a single night.

  February 1942 and Viz. Admiral Ciliaxs mighty Scharnhorst leads her sister Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen up the English Channel during Operation Cerberus, their daring breakout from the port of Brest on the French Atlantic coast to the relative safety of Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbuttel. All three ships survived what became known as the Channel Dash, not without damage, but the operation proved a huge propaganda success for Germany and a crushing embarrassment for the British. A number of torpedo boats are in attendance, including Kondor and Falke and the Z class destroyer Friedrich Ihn in the distance.

The cruiser HMS Frobisher dominates this scene off Houlgate at the Normandy landings of 1944.  The monitor HMS Roberts lies beyond Frobisher with a Large Infantry Landing Ship or LSI (L) unshipping its LCAs on the extreme right of the picture.  In the foreground, a motor launch attends a group of LCP (L)s as they head for the French beaches.  Two Spitfire Mk.IXs conduct sweeps overhead as Operation Neptune gathers momentum.

B216P.  HMS Colossus by Ivan Berryman. Together with her sister ship, Hercules, HMS Colossus acquitted herself well at the Battle of Jutland where she fired 93 12in rounds, but received only two hits from enemy fire which caused minor damage and left nine crew injured.  She was sold for scrap in 1928.

 Landing craft head for Juno Beach in northern France on 6th June 1944 in support of the British landings at Sword Beach, packed with Royal Marine Commandos and the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division.  Aside from their flanking action for the offensive on Caen, their mission was to capture the airfield at Carpiquet, but they would first have to drive through the defenses of two battalions of the German 716th Infantry and elements of the 21st Panzer Division.

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on a calm, almost windless day, on 21st October 1805.  Nelsons revolutionary battle plan was to cut apart the larger Franco-Spanish fleet of Vice-Admiral Villeneuve by sailing in two single column divisions directly at right angles into the combined fleet and thus rendering almost half of the leading ships useless until the could turn and join the fight, which in such calm conditions could take hours.  The battle raged for five hours in which time not one British ship was lost, however, Nelson would tragically lose his life at the very moment of his triumph, a triumph which rendered the British Navy unchallenged in supremacy for over a century.  Here HMS Mars passes between the French ship Belleisle on her starboard and the French ship Fougeux on her port, firing a murderous hail of gunfire at both ships.  Also shown in the painting on the left hand side is the Spanish ship Monarco and the French ship Pluton.

Terence Cuneo has depicted a scene of street violence.  The angry mod hurls abuse, missiles and petrol bombs at the soldiers who are outnumbered and restricted in their ability to repsond.  Rioting of this sort became less prevalent through the increased efficiency of the Police and Army in containing it, but Terence Cuneos reconstruction typifies the dangerous situation the secuirty forces in Ulster faced during the 1970s.  Published in 1977 by the Army and Navy Club, Pall Mall, London.

 Oberscharfuhrer Ernst Barkmann in Panther 401 accidentally found himself as the spearhead of the 2nd SS Panzer Divisions night assault on the crossroads at Manhay.  Initially mistaking a lone Sherman of US 7th Armoured Division as that of his own commander, he pulled alongside the enemy tank, and only realised his mistake when he noticed its unusual red interior lights.  In a brief close quarter fight he managed to destroy the M4 with the Panthers anti-personnel mortar (Panzergranate)  He then proceeded along the moonlit forest roads past a succession of surprised American units to Manhay and on towards Liege, having left several destroyed vehicles in his wake.  His appearance caused havoc in the US defences, culminating in a rout.

To the cheers of Vive L'Empereur 17,000 men of d'Erlon's Corps advanced on the allied left centre in an attempt to break Wellington's line that was already shaken by a massive artillery bombardment.  To counter this threat, Wellington launched his heavy cavalry.  Forming the centre of the Union Brigade, so called from the composition of English, Irish and Scottish regiments, the Inniskillings charged through the allied infantry and artillery straight to d'Erlon's advancing coloumns inflicting serious casualties and taking many prisoners.  Despite appalling losses, the heavy cavalry had gained a welcome respite for Wellington's hard pressed infantry.

  KFORs route into Kosovo led through a long narrow gorge, with its bridges and tunnels reportedly well mined. On 12th June 1999, after key points were secured by airborne forces, 4th Armoured Brigade crossed the border. Though the Kacanik Defile was perfect for ambush, the advance went smoothly, and the armoured vehicles of the Irish Guards led the advance into the capital city of Pristina the following day.

 Ayrton Senna in his #27 car on his way to winning the 1990 Monaco Grand Prix, leading the Tyrell of Jean Alesi and the McLaren of Gerhard Berger out of Mirabeau and into the Station Hairpin.  The historic number 27, made famous by Gilles Villeneuve at Ferrari, had been adopted by McLaren for the start of the 1990 season after Ferrari took the numbers 1 and 2 for their cars.  Senna won the 1990 word championship in this car, but never drove the 27 car again after switching to number 1 for the next season.

 The 2002 Grand Prix season started with much excitement as for the first few races the major teams sparred for supremacy. Just when it looked as if there would be a three-way fight between Ferrari, Williams and McLaren, along came Michael Schumacher in the 2002 Ferrari and showed the supremacy of the driver and machine package. However, against all odds and demonstrating supreme confidence and skill on a track where top speed was not all important, David Coulthard made one of the best drives of his career. Pulling out all the stops lie grabbed second spot on the grid. For once on race day he was not to be easily pushed aside and from the sprint to the first corner, he managed to grab first place and though pressed throughout the race, gave no quarter. In a supreme demonstration reminiscent of Senna and Mansell years ago, he made his car so wide that no-one could pass, and went on to take a memorable and well-deserved victory. Our picture shows him at Lowes Hairpin with the Williarris and Ferraris waiting to pounce at the slightest mistake - which did not happen.
