James Tate Bryce - Crew Details - World Naval Ships Directory

James Tate Bryce

Name : James Tate Bryce
Born : 7th April 1947
Service Number : P076021
Info Source : WNS Directory

I joined the Ark Royal just after she had returned from the Far East and was undergoing a short refit at Devonport Dockyard. I was accommodated in HMS Drake, Royal Naval Barracks, and was, initially, in a Mess with 200 other crew members. After a short time, I moved into a wooden hut, behind the barracks Church, and adjacent to the Field Gun Crew training track. We were often woken early on the mornings by the Field Gun Crew practicing their runs, rather noisily. My first job on joining was Conversion Machinery with Jan Anning and I later moved to Boats and Batteries with Jan Luger. At the end of the refit, we moved back aboard and I lived in 3J3 Mess with other Electrical Branch ratings. I then did a 6 month spell as Petty Officers Messman and moved to 5G bunk space. On completion of the Messman duties, I changed jobs to Main Broadcast Systems, together with Electrical Mechanician Mick Weaver. I then moved to 3E0 Mess and continued in the same job until I left the ship in 1967, when the ship commenced a 3 year refit.
