The Kaiserliche Marine operated a number of seaplane types during World War 1 of which the Friedrichshafen FF.33 was quite typical. Powered by a Benz Bz.III 150hp inline engine, this version was equipped with radio and a Parabellum gun for the observer in the rear cockpit, as well as a small bombload, which made it ideal for attacks on light coastal shipping.

Wearing one of the most distinctive colour schemes of World War One, Germanys second highest scoring ace after Manfred Von Richthofen was the charismatic Ernst Udet with 62 victories to his credit. His brightly coloured Fokker D.VII carried the initials of his girlfriend (LO) on the side of his aircraft and the inscription Du Noch Nicht! (Not You Yet!) on the upper tail surfaces. Udet was badly wounded in September 1918 and did not fly in combat again, but survived the war, only to commit suicide in 1941.

The afternoon of 25th July 1940 was a desperate one for the already exhausted fighter pilots of the RAF defending the South coast of England. As convoy CW8 made its way through the English Channel, sixty JU.87 Stukas and forty JU.88 bombers launched a brutal attack on the ships below, backed up by fighter cover of over 50 Messerscmitt Bf.109s. Eight Spitfires of 64 Sqn (Kenley) were scrambled, together with twelve Spitfires of 54 Sqn (Hornchurch) and Hurricanes of 111 Sqn from Croydon. The British pilots found themselves massively outnumbered, but nevertheless put up a spirited fight against the teeming enemy. This painting shows Spitfires of 54 Sqn entering the fray, the pilots scattering as they choose their targets and go after the JU.87s. To the right of this, Bf.109Es of JG.26 are roaring in to join battle, whilst Adolf Gallands aircraft engages a Hurricane of 111 Sqn.

This ship was present at the Battle of Matapan in March 1941 and was successful against Allied shipping during Operation Harpoon the following year. After the armistice, she was laid up at Malta and was eventually presented to the French navy at the end of the war as reparation, whereupon the Oriani was renamed D'Estaing and served under the French flag until 1954.

Germanys U-boat fleet had almost brought Britain to its knees in the First World war, twenty years later the story was very similar. the German U-boat arm came perilously close to cutting the lifeline that crossed the Atlantic between North America and Britain. in the early years of the war Donitz realised that keeping his U-boats at sea for as long as possible would greatly increase their chances of success. here U-93 (left) and U-94 take fuel from the auxiliary cruiser Kormoran whilst in the mid-Atlantic during 1941

During the static phase of the Korean War, tanks were emplaced in hull-down positions among the entrenched infantry companies on commanding hilltops, from where the accurate, direct fire of their 20-pounder guns dominated the surrounding terrain. They were also armed with co-axial Besa machine-guns. The tanks were protected from shellfire by sandbags and earth-filled ammunition containers. Along with the crew's 'hutchie', ammunition bunkers were dug in beside the tanks. By night, both sides patrolled aggressively in no-man's-land up to the opposing lines. Massed enemy infantry attacks occurred at night, and the supporting fire of tanks was an important adjunct to Divisional artillery. In May 1953 the Chinese mounted a fierce attack against the position known as the Hook. Throughout the action, the Centurions engaged the enemy and inflicted heavy losses. In the eerie light of parachute flares, soldiers of 1st Battalion the Duke of Wellington's Regiment manned the trenches. The tanks themselves suffered on average five direct hits each from shells and mortars, without loss. Over the gun barrel of the Centurion Mk 3 tank is an American searchlight, used to illuminate enemy patrols in no-man's-land at night. Several Centurions in Korea supplemented their firepower with .50cal. M2HB Browning machine-guns, obtained from the Americans or Canadians, on an 'ad hoc' mounting. On the rear hull is hung a spare road-wheel, and the Royal Armoured Corps flash is shown, with the unit serial '41' superimposed.

But the Mameluke military Commander Murad Bey was determined to stop napoleon entering cairo so blocked the French advance at Embabeh on the left bank of the Nile near the pyramids. Under his command he had 40,000 troops but only 6,000 of these were the fierce fighting force of Mamelukes. On July 21st napoleon moved onto the Egyptian positions and Murad launched an all out attack with his cavalry. but the 6,000 Mamelukes were no match for the French Infantry and Artillery which fired volley after volley. which devastated the Mamelukes, when the charge had failed the disorganized Egyptian Infantry fled.
