History of  Royal Navy cruisers (heavy cruisers, light cruisers). Royal Navy cruiser website dedicated to the Dido Class. HMS Dido, HMS Euryalus, HMS Naiad, HMS Phoebe, HMS Sirius, HMS Bonaventure, HMS Hermione, HMS Charybdis, HMS Cleopatra, HMS Scylla, HMS Argonaut, including crew and families of ex-crew members notice board for the Dido Class cruisers.

HMS Naiad.  Built by Hawthorn Leslie  and launched 3rd February 1939 and completed 24th July 1940. HMS naiad served in the Home fleet between 1940 till 1941 going to the Mediterranean 194`1- 1942, she was sunk by U-565 of Crete 11th March 1942.

 

Specifications for HMS Dido, HMS Euryalus, HMS Naiad, HMS Phoebe, HMS Sirius, HMS Bonaventure, HMS Hermione, HMS Charybdis, HMS Cleopatra, HMS Scylla and HMS Argonaut.

 

Displacement: 5,450 tons   Speed: 33kts    Complement: 530 (556 as a Flagship)

Armament: Ten 5.25 inch de-perming guns in pairs. Eight 2pdr anti-aircraft guns in fours as well as eight 0.5 inch machine guns in fours.   Six 21 inch torpedo tubes in threes.

HMS Euryalus 6th June 1939 Broken up 1959.
HMS Hermione 18th May 1939 Sunk 16th June 1942.
HMS Naiad 3rd February 1939 Sunk 11th March 1942.
HMS Phoebe 25th March 1939 Broken up 1956.
HMS Scylla 24th July 1940 Broken up 1950.
HMS Sirius 18th September 1940 Broken up 1956.

HMS Charybdis as completed with a main armament of eight 4.5ins guns in pairs. Machine guns were replaced by six 20mm AA guns.

HMS CHARYBDIS:

DUNCAN MALCOLM:  My Father Duncan Malcolm served on HMS Charybdis when it was torpedoed and sunk in 1943. He died in 1982 but I would love to hear from any survivors who might know him or have recollections of the tragedy. David Malcolm.  davy@malcolm-msd.freeserve.co.uk 

HMS PHOEBE:

FRANK RONALD PATTENDEN... served on the h.m.s phoebe  just after ww2 he was 15 around 1946-47 if anyone has pictures or storys please contact on nickypattenden@aol.com 

ALBERT WILLIAM DRAKE.. My uncle Albert served on HMS Phoebe during WW2 from 13/05/1942 -26/08/1942 when he was reported missing. He also served on HMS St Marys from 12/09/1940 - 09/07/1941 and HMS Holdernes from 27/06/1941 - 08/08/1941. If anyone can give me information on my uncle, fellow crew members or the ships mentioned contact me at jarvisaaw@aol.com 

JOHN FREDERICK DAVIS.. My dad served on HMS Phoebe during WWII. He was from Channel, Newfoundland in Canada and he often talked of his wartime experiences on HMS Phoebe. If anyone remembers him contact me at d_davis@canada.com
