These destroyers although shown as
three Classes on the main list, were all built by Thornycroft and were basically
the same. Similar to the Ardent design. Their Displacement was 310
tons, Speed 30 Knots, Compliment: 63 and Armament: One 1 2pounder and
two torpedo Tubes. The Destroyers were later to be called D class, and
were constructed of a High tensile steel, this helped save weight. All
these Destroyers (accept HMS Fame which served in the China
HMS Ariel, Laid down 23rd April
1896, launched 5th march 1897 and completed October 1898, served in the Mediterranean,
until running into rocks of a breakwater on Malta in the Pitch
Dark night during a Gale in 1907.
