E19From The
Romance of A Submarine (c1930) by G Gibbard Jackson |
|
E 20
Royal navy Submarine E 20 was lost during the
Dardanelles Campaign.
the loss was the result of the negligence of the Commanding Officer
Lieutenant de Vaisseau Henri Ravenel and crew of the French submarine
Turquoise. They were meant to meet E20. but The Turquoise for some
reason left the area but ran aground. The captain and the crew abandoned
ship leaving important documentation for the Turkish and German military.
Papers onboard included the information about the rendezvous. E20 (CO
Lieutenant-Commander Clyfford Warren) and E20 arrived at the rendezvous
and while o the surface was torpedoed by a single torpedo form UB14
commanded by Lt. von Heimburg which was lying in wait for E20. 27
crew were killed and 9 survivors were picked up by UB14. later E20
was raised by the Turks and renamed Mustejab Onbashy. |
