Conqueror was built at Chatham Dockyard (as was HMS HERO
) She was laid down on the 28th April 1879 and
launched 8th September 1881 and completed march 1886. she was ordered
under the naval estimates of 1878 - 1879. and was basically an enlarged
version of HMS Rupert. But both ships were to small for overseas
duties as they had poor stability and rolled heavily and during bad
weather could only make about 10 knots. So spent most of their working life
as Gunnery training ships.
6,200 tons, Speed 14 knots, Compliment: 330, Armament: Two 12-inch
Guns , four 6 - inch guns, seven 6 pounder Quick firing guns,
Five 3pounder quick firing guns and six 14-inch torpedo tubes.
