HMS FantomeThe fourth “FANTOME” is a 6-gun twin-screw sloop, launched at Sheerness in 1901.  She is of 1070 tons, 1400 horse-power. And 13 knots speed.  Her length, beam, and draught are 185 ft., 33 ft., and 12 ft.

In December 1902 the “Fantome,” commanded by Commander Hugh T. Hibbert, was one of a combined Anglo-German fleet under Commodore R.A.J. Montgomerie with his broad pennant in “Charybdis” which established a blockade of the Venezuelan coast.  These retaliatory measures were undertaken on account of outrages on British ships and subjects for which no satisfaction could be obtained.  Nine Venezuelan gunboats of the fleet, and two were taken to sea and sunk.  President Castro immediately imprisoned all British and German subjects, but was forced to release them by the American Consul.  A British merchant ship was seized by the mob Puerto Cabello, but two ships at once proceeded to the place, and having released the ship, bombarded the fort.  After an eight weeks’ blockade, in which the British and the German vessels divided the coast, the Venezuelans consented to arrangements which brought the blockade to a conclusion.  A small force also assisted in the blockade.           This “Fantome” was eventually appropriated to the surveying servive.

HMS FANTOME

RICHARD G.E. STEARN (GEORGE)..  I am trying to find information on my Great-Grandfather Richard G.E. Stearn (known as George) born 1900 London.  He apparently joined the British Navy at about the age of 16 and served aboard the Fantome.  He possibly jumped ship during its time in Australia.  He married in Sydney in 1928.  Where can I (in Australia) search records which may include information of his service aboard, and departure from, the Fantome?  I would appreciate any assistance or advice.   Kathy Woods.   contact here

The British Armed Sloops Clio and Espiegle Steaming Along the Shatt-El-Arab.

On November 7th 1914, the British Expeditionary Force operating from the Persian Gulf landed at Fao, a village on the broad and deep waters of the Shatt-el-Arab. Early in the advance valuable work was done by the Clio and Espiegle, two sloops of one thousand tons, armed with six 4-inch and four 3-pounder guns, and commanded respectively by Commander Colin Mackenzie, D.S.O., who was specially promoted for his services, and Captain Wilfrid Nunn, who was awarded the D.S.O. As the advance progressed in shallower waters, there vessels gave way to an improvised fleet of tugs and paddle steamers.
