HMS Assinboyne  D.18  RCN  ex  Kempenfelt 29th October 1931 Renamed Assiniboine in 1939. Wrecked 10th November 1945.
HMS Restigouche H.00 RCN ex Comet 30th September 1931 Transferred to Canada 1937-38 and renamed Restigouche. Broken up 1946.
HMS Fraser  H.48  RCN  ex Crescent  29th September 1931 Transferred to Canada 1937-38 and renamed Fraser. Involved in a collision on 25th June 1940.
HMS Ottawa H.60 RCN  ex Crusader 30th September 1931 Transferred to Canada 1937-38 and renamed Ottawa. Sunk on 14th September 1942.
St Laurent RCN ex  Cygnet 29th September 1931 Transferred to Canada 1937-38 and renamed St Laurent. Broken up 1947.
HMS Duncan  D.99 7th July 1931 Broken up 1945.
HMS Dainty  H.53 3rd May 1931 Sunk on 24th February 1941.
HMS Daring  H.16 7th April 1931 Sunk 18th February 1940.
HMS Decoy  H.75 7th June 1931 Renamed Kootenay in 1943. Broken up 1946.
HMS Defender  H.07 7th April 1931 Sunk 11th July 1941.
HMS Delight  H.38 2nd June 1932 Sunk 29th July 1940.
HMS Diamond  H.22 8th April 1932 Sunk 27th April 1941.
HMS Diana  H.49 16th June 1932 Renamed Margaree in 1940. Involved in a collision on 22nd October 1940.
HMS Duchess  H.64 19th July 1932 Involved in a collision on 12th December 1939.

HMS Daring

 HMS Daring was torpedoed by German U-Boat U23m.  40 Miles east of Duncansby (North Scotland) on February 18th 1940. HMS daring was under the command of Commander S A Cooper. who was killed along with 156 crew. Only 5 Others survived.

HMS Defender

Several of the photographs of HMS Defender (and HMS Diamond) were sent in by Ira James....  "My Great-Uncle's name was Ben James of Malvern in Worcestershire.  These few photos I have were taken while he was serving aboard H.M.S. Defender on a tour of the far east, from the 2nd of April 1934 to the 15th October 1936. On returning to the U.K.  he transferred to submarines and served with them until he was killed in action aboard H.M. submarine Spearfish in August 1940."  Thanks for these great photos.

Chinese pirates captured by H.M.S Defender apparently a few minutes after the photo was taken they were taken ashore and beheaded by local authorities.   Sent in by Ira James.

HMS Duchess     

HMS Duchess was sunk on December 12th 1939 when she was involved in a collision with the Battleship HMS Barham in the North channel 9 miles off The Mull of Kintyre., 129 crew were killed including the Commanding Officer  Lt. Cdr. R.C.H. White  Only One officer and 22 ratings survived and were picked up.

 HMS Delight

 HMS delight   was bombed and sunk by German bombers off Dover on July 29th, 1940,   A total of six ratings died of wounds and three officers, including the commander. Commander  M. Fogg-Elliott,  another 57 ratings were wounded.

 

Displacement: 1,375 tons (Kempenfelt 1,390 tons & Duncan 1,400 tons)   Speed: 35.5kts    Complement: 145 Duncan & Kempenfelt had 175)

Armament: Four 4.7 inch guns, two 2 pdr anti-aircraft guns, eight 0.5 inch anti-aircraft guns and eight 21 inch torpedo tubes.

HMS DUNCAN

My father served on the Duncan for sometime during World War II but was transferred, he has never found out what happened to her during the latter part of the war.  He is now 86 and would dearly love to know.   Kevin Chaffey       kpjchaffey@aol.com
