Bellona Class, The New Improved Dido Class Cruiser. History of  Royal Navy cruisers. Royal Navy cruiser website dedicated to the Bellona Class. Specifications for HMS Bellona, HMS Black Prince, HMS Diadem, HMS Royalist and HMS Spartan

The Bellona Class was similar to the Dido Class.

 

Displacement: 5,950 tons   Speed: 32kts    Complement: 530

Armament: Eight 5.25 inch guns in pairs.   Twelve 2pdr pompom guns in fours as well as six 21 inch torpedo tubes.

HMS Spartan was hit by a bomb which caused sufficient damage to sink her in under two hours.

HMS Bellona was lent to New Zealand after world war two as were HMS Black Prince and HMS Royalist. HMS Diadem went to the Pakistani navy and was renamed Babur.

HMS Bellona 29th September 1942 Broken up 1959.
HMS Black Prince 27th August 1942 Broken up 1962.
HMS Diadem 26th August 1942 Sold to Pakistan 1956.
HMS Royalist 30th May 1942 Broken up 1968.
HMS Spartan 27th August 1942 Sunk 29th January 1944.

HMS Bellona

HMS Bellona as completed in 1944 with a 2pdr AA gun instead of the turret and twelve 20mm AA guns in pairs fore, amidships and aft.

HMS SPARTAN

KENNETH WILSON HODCROFT..  My grandfather served on the HMS Spartan in 1944 and was aboard when it sunk. He survived, his name was Kenneth Wilson Hodcroft, and he was an engineer who worked in the boiler room. He tried to rescue his best friend 'Dutchy' in the engine room but had to leave him behind. We're looking for any information from anyone else who was onboard Spartan when she sunk.Thanks  Emma Hodcroft (granddaughter of Kenneth Wilson Hodcroft)  Ken Hodcroft (son of Kenneth Wilson Hodcroft)   EMAIL HERE

HMS BELLONA

WILLIAM BEACH TURNER.. My father served on the Russian Convoy in 1944 - 1945.  His name was William Beach Turner, he recently died and I would like to hear from anyone who possibly knew him.  It would be an honour to find out as much as I can about his past history.  Please help if you can.  Contact here 

REG ROPER.. My dad served as a marine on Bellona and was a bandsman when not carrying out other duties. I have a precious personal and quite detailed diary that my father kept of the Normandy operation and I know that the Bellona, supported by destroyers including the famous Ashanti, engaged and sank a German convoy on 5th-6th August 1944 off St Nazaire.I would like to get more information of some of the other theatres she was involved in. HMS DIADEM

HAROLD COOPER.. I am looking for information on Harold Cooper who served on HMS Diadem during WWII. He won a bravery medal to which there was an article written in the London Gazette on the 14th November 1944, he never told his daughter what the medal was for and she would like to know. LEONARD FREDERICK PATERNOSTER: My Grandfather served on HMS Diadem during WW2. He was a scribe in the payroll office. and was on board when the ship sailed to Copenhagen in May1945 and then travelled up the Norwegian Fjords after that assignment. Soon after he was transferred to the Formidable and went to the Orient. he would love to hear form any old shipmates who served at that time on HMS Diadem. HMS ROYALIST
