| The
B Class Submarines built by Vickers, were similar to the A class with the
main difference being the deck casing which was improved for surface
performance. Hydroplanes were also fitted for the first time to give it
better stability when submerged
Displacement: 287 tons on thee
surface and 316 tons submerged. Speed, surfaced 12 knots, and 6 knots
submerged. Range: 1,000 nautical miles at 8.75 knots on the
surface. Compliment: 15 Armament: two - 18 inch Torpedo
tubes in the bow and carried 4 torpedoes
B6, B7, B8, B9, B10 and B11 were sent
to the Mediterranean soon after the outbreak of world war one. But due to
the lack of spare parts these submarines were not used after September
1915. The Italian Navy (at Venice Dockyard) re built them and
converted them into to surface patrol vessels becoming S6 to S11,
(B10 (S10) was sunk by Austrian Aircraft Bombing while being re
constructed as a patrol boat) These patrol craft served in the Adriatic
and finally in 1919 were sold at Malta.
