USS
Atlanta USS Atlanta was
the first of the class of 11 light anti aircraft cruisers. USS Atlanta quickly
saw service in June 1942 at the Battle of Midway and In August she took part
in covering the US landings at Guadalcanal and of the Solomon Islands
During the fierce air war to take the Islands. In October she was part of
the Cruiser force covering Task Force 64 against air attack and
participated in the Battle of Santa Cruz. USS Atlanta then took part
in convoy protection duties for US forces at Guadalcanal. Then
joining Task Group 62.4 her role was to protect the convoy heading
for Espiritu Santu. On the 12th November while disembarking supplies and
troops. A large Japanese naval force attacked during the night and USS
Atlanta was hit by a number of Shells and torpedoes. and sunk before day
break on the 13th. (The name of USS Atlanta was used for a cruiser
of the Cleveland-Fargo class launched in 1944) |
