The Assault landing Ships were
proposed to update the dock landing ships which were used during world
war two. This was to increase the capability of the Royal marines. Using
the design of the Us Raleigh Class, the Fearless Class assault ship was
proposed these were smaller than the us ships and were ordered in 1962.
Two ships were built HMS Fearless and HMS Intrepid. They could
carry 15 tanks and 27 vehicles plus 400 Royal Marines or for a
short period up to 700. Other Assault ships included are HMS
Ocean, HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark.
