| Asama
Class armoured Cruises of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Asama and Tokiwa.
These armoured Cruisers were ordered as part of the 1896 Second Navy
Programme and were designed by Philip Watts and built in the Uk by
Armstrong at Elswick there cruisers were very similar to the O'Higgins
cruisers built by Armstrong for the Chilean navy, But had improved armour
and larger armament.
Displacement: 9700 tons, Sped: 20.5 knots, Crew
726 Armament: Four 8 - inch Guns in pairs. Sixteen 6 - inch QF
twelve 12 pounder QG Seven 2.5 pounder QF Five 18-inch Torpedo

| Asama, laid down in November
1896, launched 22nd March 1898 and completed 18th march 1899, The Asama
along with her sister ship were at the battle of Tsushima where she was
damaged by gunfire her steering gear was disabled. Due to poor
maintenance her speed deteriorated to 19 Knots and was re-boilered between
1915 and 1917. After the First world war her role became a training ship
ad finally scrapped in 1947 |

Japanese cruiser Asama in 1902.
Launched at Elswick she measured 408 ft long and 67 ft wide with a
displacement of 9,750 tons and a speed of 23 knots. |

| Tokiwa Laid down January 1898 and launched 6th July
1898 and completed 18th May 1899,The Toriwa along
with her sister ship were at the battle of Tsushima where she was damaged
by gunfire. She was re-boilered in 1910 and again in 1937 with eight
Kanpon Boilers. Before the outbreak of World war One The Tokiwa was
converted to a minelayer and carried a total of 300 mines. In August
1927 she suffered substantial damage in an accidental explosion. and
was placed in the \reserve Fleet. at the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese was
in 1937 she was refitted and used again as a minelayer. increasing her
carrying capacity to 500 mines. The Tokiwa was mined in April
1945 and was later sunk by air air attack, in August but lay in
shallow water. the wreck was scrapped after the war

UK to Japan.
