  AMETHYST Wooden Screw Corvettes The first class to be fitted with the new compound engines. These wooden screw Corvettes were designed by Nathaniel Barnaby.  There were five Corvette sin the class HMS Amethyst, Diamond, Encounter Modeste and HMS Sapphire. with HMS Sapphire being the last wooden cruiser or Corvette built for the Royal navy. another "Last" being HMS Diamond being the last wooden hulled ship to be built at Sheerness Dockyard.
