A Class Submarines.  Royal Navy A Class Submarines launched 1902 - 1905. - History and photographs.

The a class came into being from an improvement to the Holland Class. the sixth Submarine of the Holland class had so many alterations  to its design. that it became the proto type of the a class.  A1  was an lengthened version of the Holland boats, but the A2 to A4 were larger submarines. and A5 onwards carried had a second torpedo tube, A1 also had the unwanted title of being the first British Submarine to be sunk. being rammed off the nab by the Liner Berwick Castle

Displacement

Armament: a1 - A4 One 18 - inch torpedo Tube in the Bow and carried 3 Torpedoes. A5 to A13 two 18 inch Torpedo tubes in the bow and carried 4 torpedoes.   crew 11.

A 1 9th July 1902 She was rammed and sunk by a liner called Berwick Castle off the Nab, and Raised on the 18th April 1904 Used for target practice from 1904 and was sunk in August 1911.
A 2 15th April 1903 Wrecked in January 1920.
A3 9th March 1903 Rammed and sunk by the HMS Hazard on 2nd February 1912. later raised and used as a target and sunk on 17th May 1912.
A 4 9th June 1903 Sunk in a collision on 16th October 1905 and was raised again before being sold for breaking in January 1920.
A 5 3rd March 1904 Sold for breaking in 1920.
A 6 3rd March 1904 Sold for breaking in 1920.
A 7 23rd January 1905 Lost after diving into mud off Whitesand Bay. Remains 135 feet down as a maritime grave
A 8 23rd January 1905 Foundered and sunk in Plymouth Sound on 8th June but was raised and repaired. Eventually stricken in July 1916 and sold for breaking in October 1920.
A 9 8th March 1905 Sold for breaking in January 1920.
A 10 8th February 1905 Sold for breaking in April 1919.
A 11 8th March 1905 Sold for breaking in May 1920.
A 12 8th March 1905 Sold for breaking in January 1920.
A 13 18th April 1905 Broken up in 1920.

Submarine A1 (nearest depot ship) and three Holland Class submarines.
