Submarines. Royal Navy A Class Submarines launched 1902 - 1905. -
History and photographs.
The a class came into being from an
improvement to the Holland Class. the sixth Submarine of the Holland class
had so many alterations to its design. that it became the proto type
of the a class. A1 was an lengthened version of the Holland
boats, but the A2 to A4 were larger submarines. and A5 onwards carried had
a second torpedo tube, A1 also had the unwanted title of being the first British
Submarine to be sunk. being rammed off the nab by the Liner Berwick Castle
Displacement
Armament: a1 - A4 One 18 - inch
torpedo Tube in the Bow and carried 3 Torpedoes. A5 to A13 two 18 inch
Torpedo tubes in the bow and carried 4 torpedoes. crew 11.
She was rammed and sunk by a liner called
Berwick Castle off the Nab, and Raised on the 18th April 1904 Used for target practice from 1904 and was sunk in August
1911.
